On the browser, it will show "reading disc" for about two minutes, sometimes making wierd noises, and then it will show "disc read error." I don't want to have to spend much money fixing it...

there is a way to clean it yourself, the disc read error. but it will require taking the whole thing apart, and using a can of air spray (typically found in office supply stores) to clean the lens of the laser
however, this might be difficult to do, and it's possible that it's time to retire your current ps2 - new ones cost about $130

What you can do is buy a DVD lens cleaner. Should cost about $10 or so.

my friend had this problem then he found out that it can read purple back discs
