I am on antipsychotics - the same meds given for schizophrenia but for bipolar illness - along with other medications - I went into bipolar type psychosis nearly thirteen years ago. They have very strong side affects. I feel like a zombie a lot, I often sleep too much, I often overeat so I'm on a strict diet limiting sugar and carbohydrates or else I gain weight very fast, I have had various side effects from different antipsychotics, including weight gain, and akisthasia (extreme restlessness) - with the need to constantly be going somewhere and not wanting to be at home, and there definitely is a noticeable difference unlike ibuprofen, but without the medication I would go into bipolar manias so I know I must take the medicine for the rest of my life - as I went off it once and became manic - very high then low and into a bipolar psychosis too, and realize that I can never go off of the meds again for my own mental health - but each person is different and must talk these issues over with the psychiatrist who is prescribing their medications - good luck... hope I helped described what it's like being on the meds in case you're just wondering - it's a very drugged up feeling, but for me I know it's a necessity, exercise and diet will not get rid of my severe mental illness....P.S. Sometimes I feel sort of normal but these times don't last with severe mental illness very long...

I assume you are not schizophrenic. Anti-psychotic medications are often prescribed for Schizophrenia paranoia and other disorders. All medications have side effects. There are two broad classes of anti-psychotic medications the neuroleptics and the atypicals. Other medications may be prescribed along with ant-psychotics such as for depression, med's. to counter side effects and med's. for anxiety. Each case is different. I suggest looking up the medications in question by typing the brand or generic name into Yahoo! web search and looking up the side effects and supposed anti-psychotic effect in the many links that come up. Wikipedia usually has a good short summary.

All anti-psychotics are available in different dose tablets or capsules so the strength can be adjusted, I also suggest looking up Schizophrenia in Yahoo! web search as this is not a single disease but a spectrum of disorders. The misinformation and misunderstanding of this disorder by the general public is abysmal.

Good luck in your research, good mental health, peace and Love!
