I tend to take after my Hungarian grandmother, I do not follow a written recipe I go by feel and taste, she taught me how to cook, but she never really measured things out. The problem with that is you can have an off day and it may not come out as good one time. I do get to a point where I am mostly consistent but even after 100s of times I can still mess up if my judgement is off.

Up to four times. Some things you just make them right on the spot, but others take a couple of times to get right. First time don't try to expect a whole lot. The second and third times are usually there to help get the amounts of ingredients right and perhaps add or take away ingredients. The fourth time is for perfection. Generally I would say that most people do pretty well on their recipe the first time or second time, but I wouldn't give up until the fourth time. Remember practice makes perfect.

I don't create my own recipes. Really don't have time for that. But I do make all my dinners from scratch and am constantly trying new recipes. New recipes turn out for me but it's a vote in the family whether it's a keeper or not. I've been cooking for a long time so it's not that hard to make something new and get it right. I don't have to ever so accurately measure everything any longer to know what makes it right or better. It's all about practice. But occasionally even a seasoned cook can screw up.

If something seems like it would be tasty, I'll give it three tries. On the first try, I have no expectations. Maybe it will be awesome, maybe not. On the 2nd and 3rd tries, I'll consider varying the proportions to get better results. If it takes 3 tries and I'm still nowhere near happy, I give it up and move onto something I'll get more satisfaction from.

not sure..some things I make come out great the first time..some others the second..I usually don't make something more than twice if I don't like it. However, I'm still perfecting my shrimp scampi, baked scrod, roasted birds, and pan seered meats..whenever I eat somewhere or see a cooking show I get new ideas....and I make those things ALL the time...

I would have to say three or four times when I use to cook, but there was a rare occasion or two the first time was a charm. Living at home again, my Mother usually does the cooking. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

three usually does the trick. I have a recipe for a zuccini dish that is different every time I make it, but it's always the same when it's the leftovers? go figure

I always cook by "taste, smell, colour, sound and consistency".
Never by recipe. When I know what goes into it, it comes out o.k.

Most of the time just once. Sometimes twice but the third time was the charm for my angel food cake.
