he ate this about 3 hours ago and has been eating and drinking fine. He pooped about a half hour ago, no blood. Should I still take him to the vets? We did call the vets and they said just to keep an eye on him. What would you do. He ate most of the bones and left some of the "splintered bones on the floor BUT he did eat some of them. Thanks

If the bones have done some damage to his insides, you won't know about it for a while! They'll work their way through his throat, stomach, gut, intestines then his bowels and finally, his anal canal!!! I know you didn't mean to give him the bones, he's probably nicked it from the table or wherever it was but all you can do is take your vets advice and keep an eye on him. I know this sounds really horrible but you're going to have to get up close and personal with his poo! Its the only way to check for blood or runny mucus. Don't give him anymore food for at least 24 hours, let the stuff he's eaten pass first plus, if he has to have an operation for a stuck bone or internal bleeding, they can do right away instead of waiting until his stomach has cleared a little! Fingers crossed he'll get away with it this time, i really hope he does, and i don't think you need anyone telling you to be careful of leftovers in the future, you're worried enough as it is! My dog swallowed a stone years ago ( its a long story! ) and we didn't know anything about it until about three days later when he refused his dinner ( he's normally a pig! ) and was laying about, totally out of character for him! The stone, having passed through his entire system!, ended up lodged in his lower intestines and could only be removed by surgery. It turned out to be quite a big op but he came through it just fine and still hasn't learnt his lesson, dopey sod, so we have to keep him away from gravel paths and driveways!!! I guess you're gonna have to keep your lad away from the dinner table or the bin in future but, for now, just be watchful of him and try not to worry too much, i'm sure he'll be ok and will be giving you a lick for the New Year - have a good one x

I'm not exactly sure why Huck got a thumbs down-the answer was dead on. I would be concerned about the bones of course, but the pancreantitis will kill and quickly, if your dog gets it. It is definitely worth a trip to the vet for an xray. A bone could perforate the intestine and the dog will be poisoned. An inflamed pancreas could liquify the dogs organs and cause incredible pain with no cure. Any time there is a large garbage eating incident a vet trip is recommended. Edit: response to the person who suggested waiting a few days. Thats what we did. By the time she got to the vet it was too late to save her. Better safe than sorry! Pinky: My word! If you don't have enough sense to take your puppies to the vet before you kill them, why would you think you can give good advice about emergencies to people who really care about their dogs? You can block your question, but those of us who answered and told you to go to the vet were correct. Your email to me, which by the way, I can't respond to if you block me, states that you love your dogs, but your advice here and your previous question show a carelessness and indifference that is frightening.

Just do what the vet said..."Keep an eye on him" As long as he is having bowel movements and is drinking...he will probably be fine. However, he will probably have a LOT of diarrhea and some major farting problems until everything works through. Large dogs can get away with doing this, where little dogs would be in major difficulty. We just have to watch out for messes around the house and the farting smells.

I wouldn't panic. Watch the dog closely and make sure he continues to eat and drink and that there is no blood in his stool. Also watch to see if he throws up. He can digest everything, the only problem would be if something ends up scratching or poking through organs. I would just monitor him closely for a few days and if anything seems weird call the vet or take him.

Yes, to the vet, just to be careful due to the bones, and turkey can swell in a dogs tummy causing blockage.

dogs should not have chicken bones, turkey bones, or turkey meat...cooked boiled chicken is fine.

your baby is probably okay, but I would not take the chance, call your vet first and he will decide if dog needs to be seen, he may say, to watch him instead....just make sure next time, you cook enough for everyone, so if this happens again, ha ha

If he passes poop without any blood in the next 12 hours you should be ok. Dogs swallow stupid things, you can't stop them.
