My girlfriend has a Holden Astra AH CDXI excellent quality European built, lots of features,,smooth to drive and great paint job ,you will find the cars built in Europe have a more solid feel on the road and also the paint jobs last longer and are of better quality ,they are built in Belgium and engineered in Germany.

The Corolla well this is going to sound funny but my Girlfriends Mother owns a 2006 Corolla conquest and yes it
is reliable and corollas always have been but to be honest the quality of the inside components and paint are no match for the new Astra's, the Corolla feels some what cheap inside
and also the doors feel tiny when you shut them ,they have a lot of torque even a little more than an Astra but they feel very jelly like on the road compared with the Astra which feels solid and safer especially on the freeway ...

They are both very economical ,but service and parts cost can be expensive for both...maybe even more expensive the Astra I would say for parts ...especially just wiper blades you cannot buy refills you have to purchase the whole wiper...when they need replacing ...

As for problems My girlfriend's Astra has had no problems so far and it's on 54'000km where is the Corolla her mother owns is on 32,000 approx and has a chasis squeak and a brake problem ....maybe it's just bad luck I dont know...

I have heard rumours that Astra's have a fair few problems but doesn't every car and also I think it's how the owner treats it ,there is a site called complaints corner where you can see a whole lot of posts from the owners of certain vehicles that have had problems but then again it depends how they treat thier car ,as a viewer of the comments you don't know if the car has been thrashed or neglected and also some people over react aswell...

I am lucky enough to have driven both cars as there a 2 people I know that own them ,in all honesty I would go for an
Astra if you want luxury, comfort and an array of features backed with quality or if you want a reliable car to get from a to b a Corolla may be for you ...

I can tell you that the Astra is far better built and finished off it looks the part aswell where is the Corolla just looks like another awkwardly shaped Japanese car ,as for Japanese built quality it's good but they have a long way to go compared to Europe with build quality of cars especially when it comes to interior ,the Japanese engines are pretty good I will admit but when it comes to door handles ,wipers seats ,rubbers, dash components the quality just isnt there and it sticks out if you compare both ...

I hope I've helped in some way ...thanks for reading

My husband is a Master Lexus and Toyota technician, and has worked on many different car brands. He would advice you to buy the Toyota in a heartbeat.

Now, before I met my husband I was researching the best vehicle to purchase. I wanted an attractive car, but one which was reliable and got good gas mileage. I finally got down to a Honda or a Toyota.

I bought the Toyota because it was less expensive. I used Consumer Reports to help me whittle down my list. Astras are difficult cars to own. They do not have the safety ratings of other cars, such as the Honda or Toyota, they break down easily, and have higher expenses in repairs.

I honestly think if you are choosing between these two alone, go with the Toyota. They break down seldom, and are very reliable with good gas mileage.

The only issue I have with the current Toyota's are the Fit and Finish. Which is the inside dash, compartments, etc. It tends to feel a bit cheap on the basic versions. I didn't mind this when I bought mine, because the reliability, safety and gas mileage was more important. However, it may mean a lot to the younger crowd. I don't believe the Conquest is the basic model. So, check out the entierior and see if it something you like enough to buy.

It is a good idea to physically drive each car before making a decision. Don't let a sales person tell you that you can't drive it yourself, they try that with women. lol

At the end of the day you have to choose which you want. Only you can know what is more important to you. I do recommend the Toyota, and hope you choose it, but you will be the one driving it and buying gas.

Good luck with your choice and enjoy your new car!

Holden is the main person-friendly motor vehicle accompanied by means of Ford in Australia with jap autos coming in third place. I certainly have had some Toyota Corolla's and that they've been very sturdy on mileage while in comparison with the heavy Holden's and Fords. Definitely the Toyota - I had a Corolla and it lasted for over 200,000 miles and was still running well and I was able to sell it for a respectable price when it was time to get something else.
