You just say"Well that's an awfully personal question to be asking me and if I wanted you to know...I would have already told you" or "Why do you want to know?" works too.

I'd say what you mentioned, that the question is too personal and you're uncomfortable talking about it. If the person persisted, firmly say that it's not negotiable and immediately move on to the next topic. If the person still didn't get the chance, say "excuse me, I have go to."
Sometimes a person is either without tact or isn't aware that these questions are sensitive. If you're in a good mood, you can sweetly tell the person that "I'm sure you think it's just a question but some of us may take offense." You can smile and shake your head and pat the person on the arm.

I like to give a completely shocking answers to rude questions. My significant other is quite a bit older than I and we attended the same church. A woman at church once asked me how our sex life was, being that he was so much older than me. Without taking a second thought, I simply said, "He's a god." She just blanched and walked away. It was all I could do to keep a straight face after her reaction. He and I STILL laugh about that and it was years ago!
Have some fun with these people! They can't help they are completely dimwitted.

All you have to say is that you are not comfortable answering such a personal question and leave it at that. If you say it enough times, they will eventually stop unless they are terribly uncouth. People just don't have the right to delve into all your very personal issues but you have the right to refuse to answer. Just stick with it.

My dad once asked me if I was having sex with my boyfriend, whom I was living with. Well I told him, that it was none of his buisness but that since he has no manners then the answer is " yes dad we have great sex".
My dad has never stepped out of line ever again.
Sometimes people has a personal question because they want to hear what they want to hear. I tell them the truth, along with how rude they are being.
If it is too personal let them know...a simple...
"I really don't think that is any of your buisness nor is it an appropriate question to ask someone. "
and that is it!

When somebody asks me a question they have no common sense asking me I might say, "And exactly why do you need to know that?" and just look at them in the eyeballs and smile. THEY'LL be the one who's uncomfortable then!

I have never been confronted with a question I didn't give an honest answer too - if they really want TMI I'll gladly give it to them.

I would just be like, "Did you seriously just ask that? I am not discussing anything that personal with you."
