None of these answers are correct.

First of all, you can't just say "the Bronx" or "Brooklyn" or "Queens" because each of these boroughs is really big!!! Brooklyn, if it were not part of NYC would be the 4th largest city in the U.S.A.!

There are parts of each of the 5 boroughs that have high crime rates. In Brooklyn, probably the worst section is called "East New York". In Manhattan it is either parts of Washington Heights or the northern part of Harlem (other parts of Harlem are really much better these days. That's why the person who said "Harlem" is wrong. Saying "Harlem" is just a reaction to Harlem being used as a symbol in movies soooo much in the past. And Harlem today is so different from what it was just a few years ago. There are still some dangerous parts of Harlem, but it's a big neighborhood. There are nicer parts as well.) There are also parts of the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island which are bad.

But there are also really nice parts of each of these boroughs. Brooklyn has some really toney neighborhoods, with homes worth millions of dollars.

I don't know which neighborhood is the worst in the whole City, but just as a guess I'd say "East New York." That seems to loom large in the various crime stories I've read in the past year or so.

EACH of the four places you mentioned has some VERY safe parts, and some not-so-great parts. Those are very wide generalizations. Some answers have been very good, giving specific neighborhoods and stats. You can't generalize a whole borough.

For example, some people said Queens is bad. However, what part? Even within Jamaica, there are good and not-so-good parts. Things can change within spans of a few blocks around there. Then, for the people who just say "Queens is bad," go to parts like Forest Hills, Bayside, and Douglaston, and you'll probably change your opinion. Same for Brooklyn, which has its East New York but also its Bay Ridge and Park Slope...or the Bronx, with parts like University Heights but also parts like Riverdale and Woodlawn. And even within Harlem, there are some up-and-coming parts, but there are also some not-so-nice parts a little farther up.

So, the one blanket statement I have for you is...don't make blanket statements, especially in New York, and don't pay attention to blanket statements that others make. For example, the borough of Queens has a greater population than some ENTIRE U.S. STATES! There's no way you can make a blanket statement for such a large population.

So, to answer your question, I know that a few neighborhoods in Brooklyn and the Bronx do consistently rate among the higher-crime areas in the city. This does NOT mean that Brooklyn and the Bronx are bad places. Just parts of them, that's all. There are good and bad parts in all five boroughs. In every borough, I can think of a place that I just wouldn't go to alone at any time unless I absolutely HAD to, but I can also think of a place that I would feel safe in 24 hours a day.

Gotta have specifics; there's just so much variation from place to place.

Brooklyn, They have some bad spots off the J train and Coney Island isnt that nice. But brooklyn also has some real nice spots like Dumbo and Park slope, just outside manhattan. Harlem is not as bad as the people on this page make it out to be. I would live in Harlem any day of the week over Bedstuy Brooklyn or Parts or anywhere in the Bronx.

Columbia University is in Harlem (Even though they like to call it Morningside to make it sound better.)

Oh and you didnt mention Staten Island which is part of NYC. That is not a hot spot.

According to the Daily News regarding the droppage in crimes, the police department wants to add MORE cops in the following areas...

BROOKLYN - Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York, Brownsville, Ft. Greene, Crown Heights.

BRONX - West Bronx (Morrisania, University Heights)

Those areas above are amongst the worst.

Regarding Harlem, in the 28th Precinct (right at the heart), only 3 homicides have been reported for all of 2007! That area has done a complete turnarond!

it quite is taken under consideration one of those annoying question to respond to, because of the fact Brooklyn is so huge! people from exterior of NYC do no longer comprehend this, yet Brooklyn is the scale of a important city by applying itself! it quite is larger than: San Francisco, Boston, Washington D.C.! So, at the same time as Brooklyn has some annoying neighborhoods, there are additionally some quite high priced neighborhoods, which you probable can no longer have sufficient money! And each thing in between, besides. As for the term "genuine NYC" - Brooklyn is genuine NYC!!! i'm assuming which you advise long island. long island is in simple terms yet another area of NYC, no longer the only area. in case you have been conversing with reference to the version between residing in NYC and New Jersey, you will have a component, yet Brooklyn IS NYC. and a few aspects of Brooklyn are, frankly, hipper.

well there could be violence anywhere, but like the guy above me said NYC isn't nearly as violent as some other cities. Anyway I'd say south bronx, some, but not all, parts of Brooklyn, in Queens- jamaica isn't that good, but there are alot of nice places in Queens like Forest Hills, Astoria, Flushing. I'd stay away from Staten Island though

I would think parts of Brooklyn: Brownsville, Ft. Greene, Bed.Stuy. But the So. Bronx is rough too. But you must also understand that NYC doesn't even appear on the top ten crime cities.
