because their parents do

What goes in is what comes out. If kids are hearing nasty language, whether from a parent, t.v., or the other kids on the bus - they will most likely try it themselves. They'll keep using profanity until they get punished for it. A little dab of dish soap on their tongue will help to tone it down.

First of all, they have to hear the language from somewhere - either kids at school or at home. If they think their family members or friends at school are "cool" then they will want to be like them and use swear words. Some kids use profanity just because it's commonplace to swear at home. Sad, but true!

Rebellion is within all of us. Tell a child to not curse and the temptation to do so becomes nearly overwhelming.

A better question would be why do adults use profanity.

Most people, regardless of their age, tend to use profanity because it is the easiest tool for them to use when they don't have enough command of the English language to fight back with non-profane words.

From the constant barrage of movies and TV as well as their own parents. What was R rated 20 yrs ago is now either PG-13 or even PG. Don't get me started about all the reality TV shows. It is a serious problem leading to a moral decline in this country.

They copy what they hear around them,
They think it's fun to shock authority figures by using it,
They are trying out ways to be different from their parents/community, and
They re looking for ways to fit in with the culture of their own age.

Children aren't the only ones.

They learn it from adults, other children, teens, the media, etc.

They get reactions when they say swear words.

They think it is cool.

They have a limited vocabulary.

Em..why not? Usually they use it for a couple reasons (children that is)...
1.) They hear it at school, and they seem to use it cause it's "cool" since the kids in school use it.
2.) They are told not to use it, so they rebel.
or
3.) It's just a word in their vocabulary and they like it.
I guess you can take their control away when they're young...but not for long (if they're smart).

They learn everything good as well as bad by nature. They can hear it at home, school, on TV or just in public. They of course are going to repeat it they don't know what it means just that they heard it and can get a reaction from you when they say it! It's up to you how you handle the situation and how to teach them not to say certain things. GOOD LUCK HA HA!

This really couldn't be answered by one person. I'm 14 and I could tell you why I swear. It's just that everyone else does it and you hear them say it so much, and it just slips out into your vocabulary. Eventually, it becomes a habit, and you can't help but let it slip out.
