i guess he doesn't wear deodorant and smells like sweat

Take showers together. Buy him your favorite smell and tell him you think it's sexy.

Be sweet and gentle but honest with him. Phrase it as a question, not an accusation or a put-down. He may have some health issue he has not discussed with you.
Talk it over, and if you decide to buy him soap and deodorant, try the natural products like Tom's of Maine. You might also try Whole Foods or any good natural food store and see what they have on their shelves that might help. He may be allergic to the typical over-the-counter soaps and deodorants, which may explain why he doesn't use them. You'd be surprised how many people are chemically sensitive.
As for colognes, I wouldn't even go there. It's not a good idea to cover up a body odor problem with cologne; it just makes it worse and colognes are made out of chemicals that are toxic for many people, if not all people. Once he deals with the hygiene or cleanliness issue, if one even exists, you may be able to find an essential oil that he would like. Again, just don't use it as a cover-up.

Men don't usually smell themselves so he might not know how ripe he is. If he's at your house, throw a towel to him and say that you would love to smell him after he showers. Otherwise tell him that you would like him to shower and use deodorants more often.

Just say, wow I really love that green kilo axe/tag smell...like I smelled it today and I LOVE it. Guys always wanna impress their girlfriends, so he'll buy the axe especially since u said it and its cheap. Problem solved!

Be straight up with him if he smells funny just tell him he smells funny and he should do something about it... Isnt it a turn off for you?
