They go through the same training as other nurses do to get their RN but may have an emphasis on psychiatric training (like a minor) or go on for training to become a psychiatric nurse. Some psychiatric nurse with a masters or doctorate in nursing take test s to qualify them as psychiatric nurse practitioners who can prescribe for and counsel patients.

I am a long time recipient pf psychiatric care for a psychosis and in my estimation psychiatric nurses are the most important of the mental health medical community for recovery because of their, usually one on one, TLC of the patients.

Good luck to you and your friend in becoming nurses, good mental health, peace and Love!
