I have a son who's a marine and stationed at twentynine palms, CA. Alot of good advice already. One last thing; before you join, take advantage of FREE airfare for your parents or two other people to attend your graduation. Having someone attend your graduation will be a big deal to you when the time comes. I can get the airfare for you abosutely free if done before you join. Email me from my profile, IM me or call me at (817) 371-5120.

Nothing will prepare you, and if you want to be a Marine, be a Marine- avoid the advice about the Air Force. I say that because it will change you and you'll need every ounce of devotion to get through it! As someone said, if you aren't in shape- get in shape LOL They take no prisoners, haha.

My family were/are all Marine and Navy (Brig. Gen)- my cousin has been a USMC Sniper for a while now, is going back to Iraq for his third tour. He had the hardest time with it, shooting and killing someone during his first outting nearly wrecked him, and he hated the military- only to end up a sniper LOL *see, change*

It does involve your family, but you can't make every decision based on how your family is going to react- the only people you should really think of is your spouse/kids if you're married or have any.

Best of luck :)

Just be sure you have the heart for it and aren't joining for stupid reasons, becuase once you're actually in the Marine Corps life will get pretty rigorous, and being a Marine is not always as cool as it seem. I know Marines who love the Marine Corps and I know Marines who hate it. It depends on if you have the heart for it.

I personally think you're making a good decision to become one of the few, the proud. The uniforms are a plus.

Are you joining because you want to be one of the best of the best?? If you are, you will look for that "something extra "in your heart to get you through the rough spots. You know there will be some, but you will look beyond them . deal with them, and get through them.

The ones who join to show their pals what a hotshot they are and to impress the girls are the ones that run crying to mommy asking how they can get out of the Marines when that big . bad DI pushed you to BE one of the best. They can 't take it.

Good luck, and , go get 'em.

leave "cant" at home and take " Yes Sir, can do" with you. You will be tested, tested and re-tested and then they will tell you that you will never make it and you will never be called "Marine". But, if you want to wear the title of "US Marine"..."can do" will do it for you. It will be the single hardest thing you ever do in your life..hopefully, but it will make you proud and thousands of Marines before you proud too. Simper-fi
One last thought. Its your choice daily, for the rest of your life, to either make the best of each and every day, or go around feeling sorry for yourself and tell yourself that you did not deserve to be treated like this. Every day can be happy or miserable...your choice. You decide to allow to let people ruin your day or you stay in control of your life and be happy.

Discuss this with your loved ones because this decision will effect them as well as you and you should show them the respect they deserve. As someone else said get any promises from recruiters in writing because any school guarantees or MOS will hinge on it. That said, it's your life. As a veteran, I've never regretted my service. If this is the way you choose thank you in advance for your service
