Okay so Mainstream Bible isn't the best wording. I am a LDS, and as you know we have the Book of Mormon. Many people try to discredit the Bom, first by using Revelations 22:18 "Do not add unto this book" meaning the book of Revelations. Others says because there is no mention in the Bible about Nephi or the Jaridites that they most not of exsisted. Also, there isn't any evidence to support the BoM, but not every place has been found in the Bible as well. So what my question is this...Is it possible that there were other people in the world that kept records as well, and that it could be true that the things that happened in the BoM happened?

I wouldn't draw that conclusion. However, I would say that anything claimed to have happened which is actually contrary to what the Bible says, is a real big hint that the claimed happening never really happened. (Isaiah 8:20)

For example... The Jewish Book of Jasher states that Melchizedek was actually the son of Noah -- Shem. I think that's highly likely even though the Bible does not confirm that explicitly. After all, according to the genealogies, Shem would have died when Isaac was 50 years old. Also, it is not against what the Bible has to say.

God bless.

You might read about how a Bible translation committee is assembled, the rules they follow, why certain books of the Bible are left out based on what standards.. I would assume that each denomination has its own way of approaching this. Whenever a word is translated, the word could have more than one meaning.. In translation projects sometimes things are left out or added but not to mislead a reader, just to make a sentence readable in modern language. In German Geist is mind, spirit, ghost.. So many arguments about words as far as the Bible. Really the teachings and overall context are the most important because from the Catholic point of view, the Bible is some history, some allegory, some poetry and some creative writing but all inspired by God with human authors long ago scribbling down the words of the original texts.

I really am not sure what you mean by "mainstream." Do you mean do/did miracles happen other than those in the Bible? I'll be glad to edit my response after I understand your question better. Thx for clarifying! :-D

Edit: Oh, I get it. Yes, there are definitely extra-biblical historical accounts and records that can confirm the accounts in the Bible. I really have no idea if the accounts in the BOM have been confirmed by other records or not. I would think Google searches would shed some light on this.

Good question. I doubt too many of your answerers knew what you were asking, though.

What? Lots of things have happened historically that are not recorded in the Bible. They still happened.

Something tells me you don't mean things like the construction of the Great Wall of China or the Fall of Rome. There are many books that were written by folks who used the names of well-known religious writers or figures of their day. Many of the books purported to be written by the Apostle Peter, for instance, have been proven to have been written over a hundred years after his death. People would use a well-known name to lend credibility to their work. These books weren't written to deceive, but were often written by folks who didn't really understand things correctly.

The early church had a hard time sorting out what was truth and what wasn't. A Council met, and decided (with much prayer and study) which books to accept as Canon and which to relegate to a lesser status. I find these other books interesting to read, but would not want to trust them as Biblical truth.

Can you be more specific? I'm not in the Mainstream Bible, but I happened.

The Bible is SPECIFIC to the Jewish Nation, and then the followers of Christ. Many have tried to add to it without success. The "lost books" of the Bible were a different belief system (gnostic), and not written in the time of the Apostles but much later, so were not accepted.

No, a lot of things happened that are not in the bible. The people in the bible could only write about what happened in their neighborhood. Things were happening in China, India, with the Indians in the USA etc.

There are many books which are not in the 'mainstream' Bible, but that doesn't mean that material in those 'other' books does not come from something that actually happened. You must remember that the books which are in the 'mainstream' Bible are the ones that 'passed the test' and were selected by man to be in man's Bible.

the holocaust last-time I checked wasn't in the bible, yet to most historians it happened. No, truth, wether we want to cop to it or not is also found outside, as well as inside the bible.

Example: 1+1 = 2
: city, state, zip (you live in)
: the current time
: etc....

aren't these things all people of all faiths with scriptures should take into concious-account, rather then subconciously-only?

such as? I'd say that if it IS in the bible that means that it DID happen, but the bible isn't a comprehensive text of every event in history...many things happened both before and since it was written that don't appear in the bible!
