Wow I was curious on this so I typed in my last name on the Ellis Island search and Wowie, All the names on the list (949) were names that were givin to my family members.

To let the chick who said they didn't actually do any paper work... Da Ding.. You are wrong. They signed their name in a log book and the log book is found on Ellis Island (Geez, have you never seen Hitch)...

I couldn't find the Signatures either. If you are close to E. Island I would call and have them look up your last name. I know it was in the movie but I'm sure you actually can if you are paying for a private tour.

Immigrants didn't actually fill out any paperwork themselves for Ellis Island. The ship's purser did that. But you can request the immigration paperwork on them from the National Archives through http://www.archives.gov

You want to ask for the Declaration of Intent and the Naturalization petition. Both will be a wealth of information for anyone coming over after 1901. For anyone pre-1901, it won't contain much information, but will contain their signature.

Neither of these records are online...there are something like 60million documents involved. But they are easy to get and not expensive.

You said one major concern that we have with thee illegals today. They are not checked for diseases!! There were also not the threats of national security there are today. Illegals are not immigrants. Immigrants respect laws and it is an insult to real immigrants to call them this. And the population was not what it is today, they also did not come and live off the services of this country then either.
