No! The suspension is tuned for bias ply non-radial tires. Don't hurt that nice classic with wrong tires!

Yes, if the size is correct. It's often hard to find good performance tires in correct original sizes for older cars, so if you want to keep the same tire size you may need to make some compromises. The usual problem comes when you go the other way around, as passenger car tires may not be rated for truck sized loads.
