1. Crate your dog during meals. No begging or pleading, no getting into the trash while you're out of the kitchen eating. It eliminates the temptation for you to treat and for your dog to beg.
2. You said your dog is overweight. Over 50% of American dogs are obese. This reduces their life span and increases the health problems they'll have. So get that weight off. Two thoughts:
--give your dog more activity. More walks for starters. Then look at other activities: puppy playdates, dog parks, performance (agility, rally-o).
--feed the exact amount specified on the food package and don't go over. And here's the trick: do not feed based on current weight (because your dog is overweight). Feed based on what your dog's weight SHOULD be.
And don't go for a low-fat food. That makes sense for an older dog with lower metabolism. But for a dog that isn't older and still normal activity, you want a high protein, high fat food (40% protein, 15% fat). Dogs turn complex carbohydrates (like carrots and grains) into fat. They burn protein and fat almost immediately (unless they get too much of it or have no activity).

LMAO @ Nickels...I agree! Seriously theres no problem feeding your dog table food every now and then like once or twice a month! Try and make sure its not any and everything you eat though! Best thing to do is if there is leftover chicken breast or things of that nature cut them up and freeze them and when you wanna reward your dog and give him a good good meal then mix it with his dog food! Anytime you feed your dog something other than what it eats(lol @ "human" food) make sure to still add its dog food with it!

I have a one year old female Shih Tzu who begs continuously, first she will give you this sweet look than she paws your leg than she will cry and when ALL that fails she goes and lays down. They can be VERY persuasive, but don't give in. The thing with our dogs is that I make them a homemade diet so, Lil. Just ignore your pup and don't look at him/her and they will usually give up. If not you have to stand your ground, if you are feeding your dog properly there should be no reason for him/her to NEED more food so think of it this way you would rather feel bad for a little and not give him/her the food than know your dog is overweight and unhealthy right? I really hope this helped and good luck with your little sweetie.

Don't feed your pet table/people food. As you have stated your dog is overweight. Your pets being overweight is just as bad as people being overweight. It can lead to all or very similar problems. Such as pancreatitis, heart disease, kidney problems, irritable bowels, gastritis, and bones and joints that become unable to support the weight. This can lead to disc problems of the neck and lower spine. If you feel the need to feed you dog things off of the table is keep some of his dog food on the table and give it to him. If he doesn't eat it oh well. Soon he will either eat it or decide it's not worth waiting for something he wants. He won't starve to death, believe me. There are two things you will never see, a dog that's gonna starve himself to death and a cat skeleton in a tree. A dog will always eat, it might be a week, and a cat always gets out of a tree.
Be patient and don't feel the need to love your dog to death with food.
One more thing. The food you keep on the table with him make it a lower calorie food for dogs.

I would usually eat my meal and ignore the dogs when I am eating and when I am done, I will give them some carrots and a bit of meat from my plate and put them into their bowl.
I don't think there is anything wrong with giving them table food so long as it's not fatty and is not too flavorsome and of course so long as it's not something that they can't eat- like onions.

just about every pet owner wants to give his /her pet a treat.oh those eyes!!not all people food is bad for dogs such as the carrot.little bits i don't believe hurt either.the problem is the dog expecting the food can be a problem.some suggestions-remove the dog while you eat,let the dog earn the reward with some interactive training-sit,stay.you get the idea-forbid the animal from your table while you eat, offer low cal dry dog food as a treat altho they catch on to that pretty quick.cut down on regular pet food.it's amazing when you read the labels how little they need.good luck!

Hi, I also have a shih-tzu and have the same problem with her, she is not overweight but will be if I carry on. Of course now that my partner decided to buy half a cow for christmas dinner and we are still eating roast beef 3days later I fear I will never get her back to dry dog food.
Come New Year we will both go on a diet. All you can do is just be strict with her, I know its hard, especially as nothing melts your heart as fast as a shih-tzu begging.

Just don't give it table food. don't put leftover in the garbage either. Feeding your dogs table food makes them develop the most obnoxious habits, like getting into the garbage, and trying to take your food when you are eating.

Use the carrot as a treat (not form the table). NO BREAD (wheat can cause allergies).
What regular food does the dog get? Increase her exercise/walks.
