It is, as others have said, possible to have reconstructive surgery. Many women choose not to do this however as it is major surgery - far more so than the mastectomy itself.

I personally decided I didn't want to spend any of whatever time I had left undergoing and recovering from such major surgery, so I have not had a reconstruction.

I know many women who did choose reconstruction and are very happy indeed with the results.

I'm fortunate in that I live in the UK, so if ever I change my mind about reconstruction, even years down the line, I will be able to have one on the NHS.

A properly fitted prosthesis, worn inside your bra, will look and move exactly the same as the other breast under clothing.

Breast cancer is devastating, it scars physically and emotionally. However, it is possible at a later date to have reconstructive surgery and rebuild the breasts:

Panda is 100% correct, although some surgeons perform the reconstruction at the time of mastectomy. This is more convenient as the woman has to endure one surgery not two and they have immediate cosmetic results.
