I would say it depends on where you live and where you plan to go. If you live in the northeast and/or enjoy going to Montreal or Paris, then try French. If you live closer to Florida or the southwest, then Spanish would probably be more useful.

Just be aware which dialect you are learning. Parisian French is not the same as Quebecois. Spanish in Latin America is also different from that in Spain.

Personally I chose French because I asked my friends about what they thought of their classes. Everyone who took Spanish at my school complained about their teacher and that they didn't learn anything. Meanwhile, the two French teachers I had were some of my best instructors while I was in high school. I still remember a lot 10 years later. Even though I speak French less than I probably would use Spanish, I'm still happy with my decision because it wasn't wasted time.

They can both be equally useful, although French is mostly limited to Europe and Canada. Spanish appears more widespread because it's all over south and central america as well as many parts of the US. I guess if you're planning on visiting a country from the language of your choice, you can factor in where you'd want to go.

They each have their own difficulties. For me, Spanish was more difficult to remember conjugation-wise, but it was easier to read and write.

Think about if you're planning on using it and if so where and when. See what's right for you. If it's for pure enjoyment, try learning a bit of both and see which is more fun. If it's for practical use, see what would be more useful for your future career. I chose to learn French because the sound of it was beautiful, but I would also like to learn more Spanish someday because it seems to be everywhere I am nowadays (I live in the US). Italian is another romance language that I think sounds wonderful. I think Portugese is also considered a romance language, but I could be mistaken. Best of luck deciding and happy learning!

Smile. I would learn Spanish first, because it is a much easier language to learn. French is very complicated. It also is the most romantic language in the world to me personally ( I happen to be fluent in 6 different languages). Others include Italian and Spanish as languages of passion.

Romance languages are generally divided in two groups. One being the Italian and Romanian and the other covering the Portuguese, Spanish, French and Catalan. As to which you would learn first would depend on your needs. Today in American the Spanish is very useful. However, if you want to be an interpreter in France that would be the choice. For me, it would be learn Spanish for the usefullness and the French for the beauty of the words.

I would learn Spanish if I were in most states, but if I lived in a Northeastern state bordering Canada, i'd learn French. If both languages mean the same to you, go by which one will benefit you most.

Spanish is easier to learn.. i took 5 years of french and I can hardly conjugate my verbs anymore, I never took one Spanish lesson, but after going to wal-marts and sears and reading all the signs in the stores I am learning more Spanish by the day, and Spanish is being forced on me every time i try to make a call to an automated phone call.. Spanish would probably be more beneficial. I guess it all boils down to whether you would rather parlez-vous francias or habla espanoil
