For a nostalgic ride through an older part of the city, ride the St. Charles streetcar. (Trolley). You can pick it up on Canal street. Bring a camera that can take fast snapshots. The route of the St. Charles streetcar line takes you past what used to be the "garden district." Many of the old homes are still standing, though many others have converted the interior to apartments.
Bourbon street is fairly safe for several blocks. If you are there, try to get to the Acme Oyster House (I think on Iberville between Bourbon and Royal). Traditional fried seafood and they have some broiled and blackened items on the menu.
Some of the clubs still have live music from traditional Dixielan bands. The more modern clubs use recordings or cheap garage bands. Tour the Superdome if you can. Hit the Aquarium of the Americas. See if you can get directions to the National D-Day Museum. It's a gas. (My grandson LOVES it.) Walk around Jackson Square - lots of little art shops and sidewalk artists abound on a good day.
Look for Michaul's restaurant, which has live Cajun music. It is on Convention Center Blvd. across from the Riverwalk shopping center. Or Mulate's on St. Charles, which also has Cajun music. The food there is quite decent and the atmosphere is incredible. Don't expect to spend just a little time there, though. They get CROWDED real fast.
For more somber viewing, if and only if you have the time AND the stomach for it, there are bus tours that will take you past the devastated areas so you can see just how bad Katrina hit us.
