People who think that emo people and cutters are just stupid. They obviously don't know what they are talking about. People who have never cut before don't know what its like and they don't know how it effects people. Society has made it seem like the only people that cut are emo kids, just because they seem depressed and sad a lot.
The truth is, though, that the majority of people who cut are teens who seem like they are really happy people and have great lives, when actually there is a lot more going on in their head.

It's just a stereotype that has spread.
You see, there is a small element of truth in all stereotypes- we may not like it, and it may not be pleasing to face, but you and I know that it's the truth.
For some reason, stereotypes provide easy answers to complex problems.
Besides, people are lazy. They don't want to investigate into things. We all want an easy answer- but there aren't always easy answers to things in life. It just doesn't work that way.
People love to generalize, because, again, we are lazy. If people can't understand something, they make unnecessary assumptions and fail to test them.
Some people who are "emo" cut themselves. But certainly not all of them do that.
Then, like yourself, there are people who self injure, but have nothing at all to do with emo stuff. I am not a proper authority on either of these subjects. I don't really know what "emo" means, aside from "emotional." I don't really have a Ph.D. in Psychology, and so I don't really know why it is that people have a tendency to cut themselves.
The reality and the truth is that people make an association between these two camps. It is false, but convenient. People don't want to challenge it.
Making fun of people with any sort of mental illness is immature. It should not be joked around about. Having depression, schizo-affective disorder, borderline personality disorder, OCD, etc is not any individual's fault. Life is already hard for "normal" people- it is all the more difficult and lonely for those who suffer from mental ailments.
Yes, they are separate issues. Folks are not motivated well enough to educate themselves anymore.

A girl in my class cuts herself REALLY badly. I am not her friend, and she is kind of weird, but I really do worry about her. I go to the school counselor because I saw her legs onetime and I had a nervous breakdown in front of all my friends. I feel for her and I would just like to know what goes through her head when she does that. It upsets me because even though I am not her friend, I want her to be happy and not inflict self injury upon herself... I mean, we are in 8th grade.

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU!!
I cut, and my brother found out, and started calling me "emo", but I can assure you, i am not. And i have a kind of emo friend (stereotypically, she listens to MCR, TBS, etc. and dies her hair odd colours and wears a lot of black) but she doesn't cut herself so I agree.

I was a cutter in the 1970s; there wasn't any such thing as "emo" at that time.
