We are in a fight whether or not to move to a more secular society, where Religion and State do not mix very much. But more and more I'm seeing the Military being brought into this fight. Should the Military be part of this? Should God ever be seperated from the fighting man? I'm not talking the Military establishing a religion for the forces, but the Military to be able to openly show its belief where it exists?

Alright I think the first guy missed the point. I'm talking the common soldier, sailor, airman, marine here. Not an instituional application of religion. But open prayer in public places, acknowledging his existance. NOT using the belief for Military or Social purposes though.

Seperation of Church and stae.
Well, it is called the Establishment Clause, from the first amendment stating their shall be no establishment of a religion. Nowhere in the Constitution, 27 Amendments, or the Federalist Papers (written by those who wrote the Constitution, and used as a Reference for US Supreme Court Interpretations) does it say their shall be a seperation. This stems from a desicion in the early 1800's from I believe John Jays Court, when a Chucrh of the US was attempted to be formed. I'm not sure of the details, little foggy on that one. But, where that seperation is, is still not clearly defined, hence the current battle.
Remeber the same amendment for the establishment clause, also protects freedom to express religous views.

SUZIE, thanks for the star. I do not see an issue with gays being in the Military. The issue is with the politicians and social engineers, not us in the military.

I spent eight years of my 25 year Navy career with Fleet Marines. I attended a lot of "muddy boot masses" where the altar was the front end of a jeep. So did a lot of others who answer questions on this Yahoo section.
Those who go to war focus on the war. It isn't some football stadium where we gather for group prayer in the locker room before hitting the field. I suggest you do some individual study on how warriors worship their God while going about the task of killing others.

Didn't you swear to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States when you joined the military?? What does the Constitution say about separation of church and state?? Just curious. The military has a hard enough time dealing with the gay issues, and does not need the distractions of religious extremists or fanatics. You have the right to say your prayers and express yourself in your own way. That should be enough.

Military people swear to uphold the constitution... but in the end of that oath the say so help me God. Religion is part of the military... it was once said their are not atheist in fox holes... meaning when you get to fighting you are praying their is a God... and if he doesn't keep you that he will keep your men and you family after you are gone. Military people are allowed to openly express their beliefs, that is why there are chaplins and churches on base. To make sure that servicemen and woman can express their beliefs.

God and the military have had a great relationship in the past.

Take a look at this military belt buckle: (oh, it's real all right--standard issue)

PS: There ARE atheists in foxholes, I assure you.

In the military, there is a high value placed on religion. Prayer has always been advised, and chaplains are always on call. Remember, this is one nation under God..... I'm not against ANY religion, any prayer and beleif in a higher power is awesome, but at least respect the fact this nation was founded under God.

One of the greatest strengths of our nation is not just freedom of religion, but also freedom from religion. You can believe whatever you want, worship where your wish or have faith in nothing whatsoever

Which God?

Every side claims God.

Silliness.

God would rather do the killing himself?

We all swear to uphold the constitution. But I refuse to say, "So help me God." or "As Thor is my witness."

God will always be around. He will always be persecuted by some, diminished by others, turned into a war monger by others, but He will always be around. He will be in our Courts, in our Congress, in our schools, in our Military, and everyplace else you can name, but he will "not" be in every ones heart. Why is that?

God hates the military because he is against killing people.
