Atheists have no "faith" when it comes to religion. That statement is ignorant, whoever told it to you.
They believe in things they can see, touch, taste, smell or hear. Or things that were proven via science.

I have no idea for sure why your Christian friend said he thought an atheist had more faith than a Christian, but my guess would be he figured if you're alive and intelligent, then you must at least believe in the physical universe you inhabit. The sun, the earth, the stars, the law of gravity, etc. - believing in all of that, even if it might seem to obviously exist, is still a belief system. Many people (perhaps your friend) would find believing in only that to be so completely depressing that they can't imagine anyone getting through 24 hours sane with such thoughts and concepts. Your friend was probably saying something like "if you can live through each day believing only in a physical reality, without going crazy, then some kind of something is helping you keep going, because I could never survive even 24 hours like that, so you have got to have some kind of faith that it (whatever it is) is going to turn out ok anyway, despite not having a God concept." Does that sound like what your friend might have been conveying?

IMO, Christianity REQUIRES A-L-O-T of Faith!
FAITH - In Believing God is Real
FAITH - In Believing Jesus is God, Son of Man, Died & Raised on the 3RD Day, Will return to Earth to Save Mankind, etc etc etc.....
For Atheism, it really means there is no belief is any God{s} which requires no faith whatsoever, but merely just a choice.
Without Faith; How could any person believe the Bible and the whole basis of the Christian Religion?

As an agnostic, I am concerned with this world and I have a Hope that things will get better. I don't expect god to do anything. She hasn't so far and I think it is up to us. our leaders are all corrupt and greedy so the "Have not's" are growing in numbers but that is not all bad. someday the have not's will take what they want or need. it is easy to see where it is located. There are so many that they will overwhelm the Greedy ones. They are fat and lazy and it will be over in no time. Paper wealth is of no concern to the have not's. "Things are what they will take away from the greedy ones".

faith is a teachable skill.
it is used in many things other than religion.
when learning biofeedback it is a crucial thing to learn.
and example is you are trying to change the temperature of your hand and you have a very sensitive thermometer connected so that you can tell what is happening, if you have no faith at all, it will not change, once you have faith, you can get it to change rather quickly.
message me if you want more details
update:
just read the other answers,
I don't think they understood your question, looks like most people are trying to mix 2 unrelated things,
you asked about faith, not faith in god, right ?

Faith is associated with the belief in a God/Deity. Atheistism is NOT a faith but a belief in intellect. Their stubbornness and opposition to people of faith only helps people grow in the Spirit of Faith.

Peace.....Faith is the gift of being able to perceive the unseen - it seems Atheists do not have this gift. A mystical experience is generally for the individual having it for God's own intervention in their life. Sometimes this happens in or to a group also. Prayers, "orthros"

Some people allow themselves to believe that rabbits lay eggs, but there are others who live in reality. But also you need to understand that atheism is not a religion. Religion must depend on dysfunctional minds to survive, but atheism merely accepts the fact as we all should know it, you live and you die and it is finished for that person.

When I look at the complexity around us in the environment, I do think it takes more faith to think that it all happened by random chance, than to acknowledge a creator. Now, granted, just looking around won't necessarily lead you to Christianity, but to the acknowledgment of some God. To believe nothing created the universe, seems harder to believe than that something did.
My opinion.

That line is just a flagrant argument from personal incredulity: "I don't think like you, so you must have massive faith in your beliefs." It shows an absence of empathy, as well as the formal fallacy.
The argument is easily countered with Russel's teapot, which indicates that absence of faith in the absence of evidence is not irrational.

Blessed 3 got it. "To believe nothing created the universe, seems harder to believe than that something did". The Creationists are always trying to prove what they believe, which is caused by a lack of true faith.
