I ask this question now, as I mentioned this in an answer.
At the time of Hurricane Katrina, what I heard in Christian circles, and read on theological websites pretty much across the board is that it was God's judgement against homosexuals in New Orleans.
I know it happened a time ago, but I would like an answer to this as it has been bugging me.
Is it the official position of any church or denomination, of pentecostals or evangelicals, that New Orleans was laid waste as God's wrath against homosexuals?
I was NOT AWARE that gay people were the only people living in New Orleans. How do you know that gay people brought the hurricane?
Maybe it was the Jews, who are there setting themselves up against the knowledge of Jesus!
Maybe it was the seventh day adventists!
Maybe it was the Catholics!
Maybe it was the blacks or the Hispanics!
No, I've got it. It was the baptists!
Or any group you feel like blaming.
Is it the general belief of evangelical churches that natural

disasters are God's judgement agianst gay people?
When hurricanes laid waste Orlando Florida, it was said to be the hand of God against Disney World for being pro-gay.
Are we - homosexuals - to be blamed for every natural disaster to strike the face of the earth?

This is not one group that I heard this from. I heard recorded sermons from churches in different countries, I read these things on abundant theological websites.
Is it the position of any church or denomination that homosexuals are to blame for natural disasters?

My husband is from New Orleans. It wasn't just the homosexual population people were using that excuse with. What I heard was a bunch of Christians claiming that "New Orleans deserved it because its the city of sin". And yes, I heard those exact words from more than one Christian.
Apparently everything the city does is worthy of condemnation by the Christian god.
Its quite disgusting.
Oh, but you haven't heard the worst of it... during the storm, people were trying to seek shelter and help from the local Christian churchs. They were actually refused. One of the churchs actually said no because the people were "unclean" and "sinners".
I thought the churchs were supposed to help the less fortunate, but when you hear them refusing people food and shelter during extremely trying times, you know them for the liars they say they aren't.
What happened during Katrina was completely despicable. For many reasons. For the gvt response, for the church's response, for the people that didn't leave when it was offered. For many reasons. It was a travesty to the United States. And to watch the gvt actions now years after its happened, when the city has still not even remotely recovered and they're saying that they no longer want to help those poor people living there...
Its just disgusting.
The treatment of that city, of those poor people... it seriously makes me want to smack some of these arrogant jerks upside the head. Until you've been there, until its like a home to you, you cannot imagine what these people have been through. To EVER say someone deserves such a thing is just.... theres no words for how horrible that makes a person.

They seem to be blamed for all the ills of mankind. What broad shoulders they must have to be able to bear all that guilt and still stand upright! I doubt that God would send a hurricane or any other natural disaster to punish only homosexuals. If that was the case there must have been a very big goof because it seems to me that most of the people killed were poor black people and I bet there wasn't a gay in the bunch! Any Church that would spout such rubbish needs to rethink the 'Christian' thing!

That is probably one of the most ignorant things I have ever heard in my entire life. And I'm dead serious when I say that. I'm a Muslim, and live in So. Florida... I've experienced many, many hurricanes, but never once thought homosexuals to be blamed for them. That's so ridiculous. My God... what idiots we have in this world.
I'm sorry that homosexuals have to deal with things like this. It's really terrible.
Oh, and the mosque I go to has NEVER said anything close to that. Only to pray for those that suffered from the disasters... as we do with all disasters.

No-that is NOT the official statement of ANY DENOMINATION!
Any denomination that DOES say that, isn't following Biblical principles:
Matthew 7:1 (New International Version)
1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
As mere humans, we don't always know why God allows thing to happen-BUT-we know that whatever DOES happen, He DOES have a reason, for it, as seen here:
1 Corinthians 13:12 (New International Version)
Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

Good grief. I remember hearing that too. I think it was Jerry Falwell who said it. Thank God he is dead and will not be able to spread his vicious hatred anymore - unfortunately though, he spawned it within those who heard and believed his message, so it didn't completely die with him.
EDIT: Oh wait, my mistake. Falwell said that after 9/11, when he blamed 9/11 on the fact that the USA has homosexuals living in it.
So of course at least we know he agreed with Pat Robertson on blaming the homosexuals for Hurricane Katrina as well. I guess he let Pat take the heat on that one alone.

I do not think it is the official position of any church. I think it is just a few who want someone or something to blame. In ancient times God laid waste to cities because of their wickedness. Only God knows why the hurricane was sent to flatten that area of the country.

I am a Christian, you would call me a Fundy, and I wouldn't argue with that label since I believe in the five fundamentals of the Christian faith.
I NEVER said that God was judging New Orleans or homosexuals when Katrina hit. My stand whenever someone tries to attribute a disaster to God's judgment is, "We don't know unless He said it in His word."
Now, what I did do was to give to the relief effort, not judge those who were hit.
The one thing I was guilty of, I passed judgment on the U.S. government for its non-response to the whole thing.

I'm a Christian and the biggest sin the people of New Orleans have is making a major city under sea level. I fear we'll have a similar discussion after a major quake in San Francisco someday.

you'd think it would be easier for god to sink san francisco into the ocean than target new orleans with a hurricane. if new orleans is sodom, does that make mobile gemorrah? i don't know their official stance, and i'm not entering their name on a web search, but i would think fred phelps and his westboro baptist church claim that katrina was god's wrath against gays. he's more obsessed with us than a closeted senator.

Wasn't it Fred Phelps and his lot who blamed the death of soldiers on gays?
I have a theory that these people all have bad breath. Comes from talking through their backsides for years and years and years.
