When I play a DVD on my Coby upconverting DVD player, the voices stop matching the characters on screen. It starts out fine, and then starts to distort. It fixes when I pause it for a few seconds, but it gets kind of annoying. Is this a trait of upconverting DVD players. Could mine be defective? Is there a way to fix this?

It shouldn't have anything to do with the "upconverting" of the video. What is actually doing the digital-to-analog conversion of your audio? Your DVD or your surround processor? Are you by any chance running an analog connection to your processor?

One possibility that I have seen is having an analog input being reconverted to digital at too high a level. It's a bit complicated, but see where you can simplify your setup - particularly the menu and controls, and you will probably be able to fix this. Otherwise it could indicate a faulty player.

Coby is a bottom-of-the-line rip-off. Their logo mimics Sony in hopes of snaring unwary consumers like yourself. Toss the Coby in the trash. Chalk it up to experience. Get a real brand name player. I recommend NOT getting another upconverting DVD player; get HD-DVD or Blu-Ray instead.

My mommy always said if you don't have something nice to say...

And yet, you bought a Coby. If there is a best ever DVD player out there, say maybe the $8000.00 Krell, then there has to be a worst also.

Defect rate on this and many other low-end brands is extremely high. Poor design and poor assembly habits are the usual culprits.

Take it back and look for something with a better marquis, a name you at least recognize.

Sorry mom...
