My boss and I have a very close relationship and have been working together for over one year. What is strange is that he he withholds a lot of information regarding his wife, time they spend together, and his kids from me yet opens up a lot more to his administrative assistant who has only been around for a couple months. Why is this?

Clarification: I'm not asking for personal information, but on Monday morning when I ask how his weekend was he won't even mention her, yet he will tell his admin that he, his wife, and kids went out for a movie, etc... I just find it odd that he puts up a wall with me regarding normal family topics. At the same time, he is very warm and kind with me.

Your boss have his own reasons, maybe he wants you too, the reason why he would not discuss his family to you.

Anyway, nobody can answer this question correctly, all answers will be speculation and guess work. But why do you care? Are you jealous? Remember, it is not good to be too close to your boss. My advise? keep a little distance and be sure to change your relationship with your boss into a professional one, unless you want a deeper relationship with him.

Good luck

Definitely too close. Why would you expect your boss to share personal info about his spouse with you?

Maybe you should start looking for another job and not get so personal with your next supervisor.

I think you should just mind your mind business and do your work. And just consider him as a boss at work.
