I've checked the usual sources (ford.com, chiltons.com, etc...) to no luck.
Anyone know of a good website where I can locate this info?
I just bought the car, and it is pretty much mint. I just want to restore it to original specs... ie paint, engine, etc.
I would like to do it using the VIN, and make it look as it did the day it rolled off the assembly line. I'm pretty sure the engine in there now is not the original engine.
Mahalos for your help!

One more thing... I know where to go to restore. I've done this several times. I'm looking on how to identify ORIGINAL equipment using the VIN.
And for the knucklehead that sent me to classicindustries.com... that is for CHEVY only... I have a Ford

The Ford vin is very limited, and will not tell you any codes for color, trans, rear, ect. you need the data plate codes for that. The vin number only gives you the year of manufacture, body style, manufacture plant and engine..
What you need is a data plate decoder and a parts casting number decoder
We have lots of decoder links in the links at our group,
here are some
http://lovefords.com
Here is a great one,

The VIN does give a lot of info, but I think one of your best resources would be the Ford Galaxie Club of America (http://www.galaxieclub.com/). I own a '64 Galaxie 500 and membership in the club was a great help in information sources, well worth the cost.

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.
Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

A ford VIN will tell you the original engine, transmission, and rear axle. The catalogs of Dennis Carpenter Ford have as much information on reading the info off the build plate as any one. I used them a lot.
But it will not tell you what radio or upholstery and such.
With some luck the build sheet is still hidden in the car. I found one for my fairlane inside the springs on the bottom of the front seat.
Other then that your hope is to go back to the Ford Motor Companies archives and get a copy.

i HATE when someone says e-bay... but ebay may be a place to find the "Ford Shop Service Manual" its usually about 400 pages... with full vin details.
maybe you can still get them from www.helminc.com thats where i get new ones from.

The only thing SVO Man left out was the data plate is USUALLY found in the driver's door jam. Other than that, he has the BEST answer!
