The English particularly in London and the South are by nature suspiscious, hostile and aggressive. England culturally is like the set of a reality TV programme with social advancement depending on how effectively you insult, condem and generally do down people around you. You sometimes find warmer friendlier people in the north of England but they're on the way out. Enjoy our gorgeous natural landscape and our museums and art galleries but keep your distance from the locals.

As a general rule, people are friendly to people that are friendly to them. I think sometimes we in the South are a bit more reserved, because we are used to living in crowds. In our own streets and communities we are friendly enough, but on the tube, or some big public place we probably don't naturally strike up a conversation. However, we are pretty generous and helpful if ever approached. The northwest is pretty friendly. In all places you get some grim people. Just smile and be nice to them, you'll be surprised at how friendly most people are when you show yourself to be so too.

Depends where you were and what the context of your meeting were.

Many small villages are wary of strangers. Big townsfolk are just too "busy" to bother with them.

Hmmm. Yes, it looks as though we're an unfriendly bunch. But it's not true. We're just a bit "reserved" and like to take a bit of time to get to know strangers.

It also depends where you come from. Most English people are initially cool towards American tourists because we find them brash, loud, impatient and patronising (and we cannot forgive them for brutalising our language and still calling it English).
We like Italians because they're funny.
Everywhere you go you will find people who are delighted to mingle with the French (not that we see many of them).
All English folk like to enjoy a joke or two with the Germans - contrary to common opinion we have a similar sense of humour.
People of middle eastern/arabic origin are sometimes treated with suspicion - for obvious reasons.

Yep. We're friendly. Come back again, don't criticise our beer and stay out of London (the least typically English city). You'll find that we will get along fine. Lol.

That sounds just about right lol. Some people in England are friendly, usually the people with a decent family and have expectations. But otherwise no, you were probs walking round a council estate talking to chavs.

It really depends on where you have visited. In larger towns and cities, generally people are busy going about their own business and don't want to be bothered with other people. In smaller towns and villages, people tend to have a little more time. There are friendly people everywhere - it isn't a North/South thing. I grew up in a small town in the South, have visited towns across the UK and always found people friendly.

I've been living here for 7 years now. I think people are here very nice and polite. When you say friendly it depends on which city you are comparing with. For example if I compare with French people I can say English people are brilliant but if you compare with a Mediterranean country maybe you can say they are not as friendly as them.

Obviously spent all your time in the South, it's unfortunately the case in England, that the further North you go, the friendlier people get (Except some bus drivers =@)

London is mostly full of foreigners....and unfortunately thats where most tourists go.
But yes, people are not as sincere as the 1950,s-60,s-70,s)...its a rat race now where most people look after number one...and submerge themselves around their associated family.
Our lovely little villages and market towns are now being ruined and transformed ...we now have more people moving into our newly built mini housing estates(mostly blocks of flats)
The UK has changed and so have the people....jobs are harder to find...jobs that pay a fair wage too...........the pubs are not as full because of the prices.....the traditional football match is now over-priced and full of foreign players throwing tantrums.........the television channels have nothing worth watching unless you pay another silly amount for Sky tv etc............Kids have no hope, less discipline and little interest....and mostly the country is ONE BIG RIP-OFF.
Generally, the supermarkets are turning us over left...right and centre ,...and alot of food is of poor quality unless you go to a good restaurant.
Our so-called culture and light-hearted spirit has been exhausted by paying the bills to just survive...and we are watching the Government squeeze the life out of the working class. We have problems with schools, hospitals etc etc and the police will throw the book at you every-time for any mistake.Common sense does not exist anymore, its all about money.
We have people from everywhere in the world flooding the country and we are witnessing cheaper labour and over stretched schools/hospitals etc etc
If your company has not already gone bankrupt or moved production abroad...then...you have to keep one eye on your work-mates...
People at work will try to climb the ladder above you at any given opportunity.
Alot of people are now saying...this country has had it !
...phew...glad i got that off me chest....lol
