Try drawing your pain out ... with a pencil applied to a piece of paper. You may write or you may draw pictures, but you will find that this is as emotionally satisfying as feeling physical pain. I know this for two reasons ... because I'm a psychologist with lots of experience from practice, and because I didn't 'cut' myself, I BURNED myself when I was a teenager. Try 'drawing' or 'writing' ... that is what I found to help me to stop using physical pain for a high, and it's what I still use today ... I'm now 57 and EXTRMELY HAPPY, but I didn't find that happiness until I was 46. Hang in there, it may take YEARS but you will find your own extreme happiness in your own way, too.

I used to be a cutter myself and learned a few techniques to help me deal with my urge to cut. The first was the rubber band technique. Put a rubber band around your wrist, pull it out, and let it snap back against your wrist. This hurts quite badly, but is only temporary and unlikely to cause actual damage. The second is to take an ice cube and hold in it your fist as long as you can. The extreme cold causes pain, but won't damage your body. Congratulations on working on stopping cutting, I wish you the best!

Someone in Yahoo Answers once suggested wearing a sturdy rubber band on your wrist and snapping it on the the underside of your arm - its pretty intense pain without damage.

Throw yourself against a wall maybe? I don't know.

I think you need to examine why you have this need for pain. I am glad you're getting help. I hope you can find something that works for you.
