In the last few days we have had a number of knocks on our door and ringing of our door bell (in our single family home) after dark. I usually never answer the door after dark unless we are expecting someone. Usually they will ring the door bell many times which is extremely irritating and a little scary.

When I do answer the door it is always a salesperson trying to convince me to buy something I do not want. I think it is not good manners to knock at someones door after dark.

What do you do?

If it's early in the evening I'll open it same as when it's light, for me the time of the day is more important than light/dark. I mean, it gets dark before dinner time in this time of the year, but there's still normal traffic in the street and all... Not a 'scary' kind of dark at all.

If it's very late I won't open up just like that, I'll just go to the door and call 'who's there' or look through the peek hole and only when I see who it is I'll open up.

I always go see who it is, I never let them just ring the bell and ignore them. You never know, it could be a neighbor in need -one time many years ago the neighbor's purse was snatched and she needed the keys to get into the house not to mention a bit of reassurance until her husband got home (we keep spare keys for each other). I'd hate to have just ignored her because I was scared... And the neighborhood isn't bad, I don't worry about going out here at night either... the purse snatching hadn't happened in our street or even nearby. I'll often enough to out to the mailbox/garbage can/etc around midnight or later.

You are right. It is rude to knock on someone's door after dark (unless it's Halloween and you have left a signal for trick-or-treaters letting them know that you have candy.)

I don't answer my door, unless I am expecting someone. It doesn't matter whether it's 8 in the am or 8 in the pm. If someone rings my bell and I don't answer it, if I know them they will call me, and then I will let them in,

Then again, I get many door-to-door salespeople in m neighborhood, no that I want any.

Hope this helps.

These days it gets dark at my house quite early in the evening. We'll answer the door up to around 9:00 or 10:00 pm. People don't usually come around after that.

always find out who is at the door. It could be someone casing your place. If you don`t know them never open the door to a stranger no matter what they say. examples my car broke down i need to use your phone....Never let them in the house. I work for the city and I need to check your gas or what ever. never let them in. get it. You can always call about the city gas man.

I don't EVER answer my door unless I know who is on the other side. If it's someone I don't want to talk to I won't answer. If they persist in knocking, I'll grab my pistol and answer the door while holding it.

I like to encourage intruders into my home. Summer is the best because I can live the door wide open. It gives me a chance to test out my defense skills that I have been spending so much money on.
