Okay I really have reached the conclusion that starting in elementary school both science and english classes need to make sure that students understand the difference between a scientific theory and a non-scientific theory. That while both science and *non* science venues use the same word with the same pronounciation...they are actually two different words with two different meanings.
Scientific Theory: an explanation or model based on observation, experimentation, and reasoning, especially one that has been tested and confirmed as a general principle helping to explain and predict natural phenomena.
Any scientific theory must be based on a careful and rational examination of the facts and it must be subjected to "peer review." This means that the proposed theory must be published in a legitimate scientific journal in order to provide the opportunity for other scientists to evaluate the relevant factual information and publish their conclusions.
General/Literary/non-scientific theory: Abstract reasoning; speculation: a decision based on experience rather than theory. An assumption based on limited information or knowledge; a conjecture without supporting facts.
This in a nutshell is why the *theory* of evolution is taught as fact in science classes...because a scientific theory is not a conjecture it is a tested and confirmed explanation of scientific and/or natural events/phenomena.
It is also why creationism can not be taught alongside of evolution in science class. Creation is a belief ... a non-scientific theory based on belief...not a scientific theory based on facts...two different things just using the same (confusing) term.
Religion is also a non-scientific theory and must therefore be taken on faith.
One other thing..evolution does not address how life started, which is another mistake made by creationist, the comparison of evolution and creation...evolution addresses how life has changed over time after it started.
If you are wanting to compare creation to a scientific theory you should ask about the Big Bang Theory. Creation and Big Bang both start with step 2, neither addresses step one..where did the creator come from in the creation belief and where did the matter come from in the big bang belief?

Many different answerers have good statements here...I'm just going to summarize a bit:
1) Proof is for mathematics, evidence is for science. No scientific theory can be proven, only have evidence that support it. In this case, the theory of evolution is one of the leaders.
2) Your sources are not scientific documents that have been peer reviewed and tested over and over in the realm of science.
3) Evolution has nothing to do with creation. Creation deals with life origins, and the theory of evolution has nothing but hypotheses regarding life origins.
4) A hypothesis is a testable explanation of one observation. A theory includes a number of accepted hypotheses that converge to explain one overarching concept. To call a scientific theory simply conjecture shows a lack of understanding.
5) I agree that creation is based on faith, but comes with ad hoc assumptions, more so than natural causes of life origins.
Hope this clears things up.

I totally agree that Evolution is a mere theory, and we really can not pin point at anything. The fact remains that no one knows where do we come from. I will quote an example," In 1963, it was spring time and trees had just got new leaves which were still tender. I was sitting under a tree and I found couple of Caterpillars, or say larve, hanging through thin strings like the cob web's from the tree leaves." It made me think that only about two months ago there were no leaves on these trees, and with the on coming of the spring the trees started having leaves and then with the leaves they started having these larves. It is nature, and believe me that even these caterpillars, or larve, or animals, or even birds have a great amount of brain. Where does the brain come from, whether in a human being, or in an animal. It is God in everything that exists in this universe. What we call a soul, is actually a form of God whom no body has seen and nobody will ever see but certainly we can realize His presence. How can we realize His presence, is a question that comes to every body's mind? Well, I will try to answer that to the best of my understanding. When you, and I, or (say) you and any other person are talking to each other, in reality who are talking or speaking? Now all of a sudden the person you are talking to has had a sudden heart attack and just died on the spot. In this situation conversation can not continue because there is only one person left, the other one has died. In actual situation that man's body is still there, (i.e., the body structure less the God which we call soul) but the God in him who was actually talking to you has left his body and thus there is no one in the body who can carry on the conversation. Thus it is God in us who makes us do what you and I are doing. So God exists all around in every one of us, and He is not separated from us.
Think of a human semen, it is purely in a liquid form, though if you see through the microscope you will find it in a shape which is indistinguishable with no bones or eyes or any other such human system but during the nine months time it takes a full human shape which makes us believe that it is God's creation.
It is purely my own thinking and has nothing to do with any religion. I purely believe in the Super power that creates all of us and I call that God or should I say we all are His representatives through whom He gets all kind of things done, good or bad. - Sarbjit

You need only to look around you and closely examine each thing you see, be it living or inert. No random accident can have ever planned such a natural progression from Nothing at all to the wonders you can hold in your hand. Examine a leaf and learn how it is designed to change sunlight into Food for itself. That kind of Engineering results from intelligent planning and allocation of the exact number of Neutrons to any particular nucleus in order to form any one of the more than 90 elements that make up Matter. The more you study atomic structure and the makeup of Matter, the more you realize that it could not "just happen". It took planning that stretched Eons into the future starting with Nothing but electrical impulses for raw materials.

The term "theory" does not equal "no proof", although I think proof in an unfortunate term in this context. There is a whole host of evidence for the theory of evolution.
Creation is not even based on faith. There is a creation story in Genesis (actually 2 but that is neither here nor there). There are several other creation stories in other mythologies. Creationism is based on story.

I think you are mistaken about what the word "theory" means in the scientific community. I believe you are confusing the SCIENTIFIC use of this word with its non-technical use. They are extraordinarily different things.
The unabridged dictionary.com defines THEORY as:
"a coherent group of general propositions used as principles of explanation for a class of phenomena: Einstein's theory of relativity."
The theory of evolution and the theory of general relativity as well as the germ theory of disease are all widely accepted as vetted scientific theories. This means that all of these models have predicted things that have been demonstrated to be true and have not yet been negated by evidence that should be exist if the theories were not true.

Evolution is all speculation with no actual observed proof.
Creationism is based on faith with no actual observed proof.
Both side will argue the evidence and say they are right,
but both are really based on what you choose to believe and what evidence you think is relevant and true.

Evolution is a theory like gravity is a theory, like relativity is a theory.
The word in science does not mean unproven. Quite the opposite; it means a testable model of interaction.
I do believe that creationism is based on belief in the Bible.

Nope you are misunderstanding. Theory in science explains all the known facts. Facts = proof. Evolution can and has been observed in labs many times.
Evolution = Is a fact
Law of Evolution = Living organism change over time.
Theory of Evolution = Natural selection and genetic drift cause evolution.
So as you can see. Science takes the fact of evolution and then explain what it is and that gives us the law. They then take all the know facts and put that into a theory to explain why and how it happens.
Gravity also has a law and a theory.

Evolution is a fact.
You've been listening to creationist propaganda designed for people who aren't very bright.
There are lots of religious people who accept evolution. I have carefully studied the Bible with an open mind, and reached the conclusion that it supports evolution, not creationism.
