There is no licensure for medical assistants in Oklahoma or in California.

Neither federal nor state governments currently require a medical assistant to be either certified or registered in order to perform medical assisting duties. No medical assisting certifying or registering organization has control over state laws and regulations. However, many physicians and medical facilities are requiring medical assistants to be certified or registered through either a state or national agency.

If you took your educational preparation and testing from a program which submitted your testing to a state certifying agency, then you must recertify for California. You are better off certifying or Registering with a national organization, then you whould not have any issues when moving from state to state.

However, you might want to try applying for the positions available in your area, as there is not legal requirement for certification.

I have never found hiring certified MAs an advantage over other MAs, and usually train my own MAs for my office, as the schools that train medical assistants often teach incorrect information, which then has to be unlearned, by the MA when starting a new position. Every MA from a program I ever hired, worked for my clinic as an extern, and had been trained by my staff and myself.
