As a paramedic....we would give it ONLY if the infant was having a severe allergic reaction.

Recently, there was a LOT of information about medications given to children. This included TYLENOL, BENEDRYL, and other cold/cough medications. The current recommendations it to NOT give them to ANYONE under the age of 2 unless recommended by the doctor, as most of them do little for the child, OR the dosage is NOT the right one.

You could call your local pharmacist/pharmacy to ask them, as they should be up to date on this, and ask them about benedryl for a 5 month old and whether or not they can have it for a runny nose. MOST pharmacists NOW are doctors of pharmacy....they have alot of training, and know the medications better than doctors do.....as this is their only job. (they don't put casts on people, remove stitches, or such).

Good luck to you.

ps....a runny nose isn't always a bad thing---it is helping clean out what ever was IN the nose irritant wise. at least it isn't stuffed.

Pretty sure that's a BIG no. Some babies just have runny noses. If you are worried talk to the doctor and if he says not to worry then don't.
