I agree with the other answers - even if you feel you're ready for a dramatic change, try not to give yourself too much of a shock by going straight to a short style.
I have also been there - my hair wasn't as long as yours, but also very thick, wavy and all one length about 2 or 3 inches below my bra strap. I wanted to try something a bit different and told the hairdresser I wanted some long layers, starting from about chin length. She told me that was boring and it would be better to go "a bit shorter". I wasn't really sure, but let her persuade me. Quite a lot of thinning-scissors work and layering followed, and I knew I must have lost a bit of hair, because she had to sweep up about half-way through. By the time she'd finished, I had layers around the face and thought it looked okay, so felt relieved, but then, as I walked over to the counter to pay, I ran my fingers back through my hair, and there was hardly any there! She must have hacked off about 8 inches of hair (up to my shoulders) in one go!
I got lots of compliments from my friends and family on my "new look", but my boyfriend hated it. I also found it wasn't nearly as easy to style and I couldn't even pull it back into a ponytail for a couple of months, and then it was this really sad stubby thing!
I suppose it was good to try something new (even if it wasn't really what I'd wanted), but I immediately started growing my hair out again and now I keep it about bra-strap length, with layers and a sweeping fringe, and I'm a LOT more careful with scissor-happy stylists!
Rule of thumb - it's always a lot easier to ask them to take a little more off than to wait the months or years to grow it out.
I suggest you have some of the length cut - say 4 inches or 6 if you really want to see a change. Then get some layers cut in all through the hair, but especially around the face. You'll find this will make your thick hair a lot more workable. The layers will also accentuate the waviness in your hair.
You could also try a longish sweeping fringe (I got one cut into my hair recently and I really like it), but you'll be amazed how fast it seems to grow out compared to the longer layers. A sweeping fringe will be more flattering to your face shape than heavier bangs. I would seriously recommend you not go too short with a roundish face.
If you like your shorter look, you could try having another couple of inches cut off in a month or 6 weeks - it might be a bit less of a shock.
I imagine there are people out there who would find it liberating to have a 10-12 inch ponytail cut off in one hit, but you'd have to be braver than me to try it! When they cut really long hair short, they usually take all the length off first, so you're left with a messy chin-length bob, which they then style into the shorter style. Plenty of time to regret your decision while you're sitting in the chair!
Anyway, whatever you decide, good luck. It does grow back, after all...

however you decide to get it cut, don't let it be too drastic. after having such long hair for a while, too short a cut, can be a bit of a shock. i suggest starting slow. maybe go a bit below shoulder length to start then, if you're okay with it, you can go shorter or into a more involved style.

I've experienced mine both ways too... but my husband prefers it short... he never ever complains when I grow it long, but is always all over him self w/the complements when I cut that off

Medium size hair because it is easy to handle and you can still carry out most of the hairstyles
