Our military power is only as strong as the health of our country. The longer we stray from the Constitution and dilute our power abroad, the less powerful we become. We can ensure our nation's safety and strength by withdrawing our forces from overseas, and sticking to the wisdom of our founders and the genius of the Constitution.

The US is actually doing pretty well in Iraq, and beat the snot out of enemy soldiers every time they engage. The problem is that there is no army for us to fight, and they are basically just mafias posing as religious leaders, killing each other far quicker than anybody can. We are basically there at this point to protect them from each other!
This is a highly dysfunctional society, and those individuals have a strong interest in keeping it dysfunctiional.
In terms of actual armed combat, America is still by far the strongest in the world, including in the nuclear arena. China really doesn't have the capabilities we do, and what they do have is highly concentrated in certain areas, while the rest of the country is desparately poor and barely able to feed itself, like North Korea.
The only way America will be defeated is from within, by the same discussions and prejudices that led to the Civil War, which if you listen to some of the nincompoops posting on this board, have never been settled.
Those are the people who will lead to the destruction of the USA - they even talk openly about mutiny against the Federal government for whatever pet issue - I call that being a traitor.

"How many years will it be before the United States no longer has military dominance over the rest of the world"
I just retired from the army and I never assumed during my 21 years of service that we had military dominance over the rest of the world or even a portion of it. We've always been able to go in and raise hell like no other but we never assumed that we could maintain complete control over another country - much less the rest of the world. To assume that any country can single handedly maintain complete control over another is pretty naive.

exciting question. i think of fairly some the scientific advances could have come from Europe besides in view that most of the U. S. are descended from eu colonists. perhaps the innovations does not have got here approximately as immediately although in view that Europe grow to be economically crippled after the 1st worldwide conflict. usa's intervention interior the wars and its advocacy for self determination a great deal helped speed up the efforts to shelter peace in Europe. although if different than that i do no longer think of the worldwide could be in a plenty worse state than it quite is on the 2nd. Human rights stream could have went on regardless and huge Britain specially grow to be a large hotspot for Asian and African immigration. in certainty the united kingdom is a much greater multicultural society at present than the U. S..

In order for this to happen the U.S would have to drastically cut the force and close overseas bases. Then another country would need the money to beef up their force and build overseas bases. WWI and WWII is what made the U.S the great power that is today. We struggled in Vietnam but in then end still had the worlds strongest military. It will be hard to overtake the U.S military because of the amount of bases we have overseas. we can attack from all sides. other countries cannot do this as effectively as we can. even if they have more solidiers they would need to be able to effectively mobilize them.

Your interpretation of what is going on in Iraq is aided by the corruption of the press corps in this country.
Our forces could win in Iraq in less than one month IF they were allowed to fight the terrorists the way the generals would have them fight.
But here, we have a liberal bastard Congress that oversees every move they make, cries 'foul' if a terrorist is detained improperly or doesn't get to wash his feet sixty times daily, and calls our Generals betrayers of the troops.
Our military dominance will be lost only if a liberal like Hillary or Edwards gets elected (or Obama) and they gut out the military like Bill Clinton did, and put us back where he put us ten years ago.
And that isn't opinion, it's fact.

every single empire in the history of the world has thought themselves the best, most enlightened, most powerful. full of those who conciously choose to undereducate themselves while berating those among them who question or denounce the leadership. you are probably mistaken about our military dominance though, look at china. over triple our population more squa miles of territory from which to derive resources, nuclear capable, etc. our country doesnt dominate the world militarily we are much craftyier than that, we control economically. also blackwater would "overthrow" somebody's govmt for anyone if the $ was right, so really they dont serve us or americas interests only their shareholders, tu savvy? and besides why would anyone who would try to pass themselves off as an american want us to dominate the world militarily? intelectually, sure. artisticaly, yes. educationaly, absolutely. technologicaly, economicaly, by all means. but militarily, why? to protect ourselves from the scary terrorists? yawn.

I do not see it happening anytime soon.
If anyone thinks the full force of the US is being brought to bear in Iraq, you are sadly mistaken. We are not trying to take and keep ground, but help another nation establish itself which prevents us from doing to that country what we are capable of. That being destroying everything quickly, and without discrimination between Civilian and Combatant, all by conventional means.
We have enough forces not engaged to win a completley seperate conflict right now if neded.

If the Democrats gain complete control of the Federal Government next November, I'd say in about 3 months.
Otherwise, I think there's a long way to go before anyone can supplant us.
