Kaspersky or NOD32 are the best (recent tests at av-comparatives.org). If you want a free anti-virus I recommend Avast! or Avira (since you don't want AVG).
2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It's cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update

OK' Now for the truth. There is no such thing as a "best free AV" All free AV's have there security holes. When it comes to free AV's there all turds. What you have to do is pick the one that stinks the least. AVG, No root kit protection, Can't remove half of what it finds, Worthless junk. Avast, No heuristic scanning in the free version except for E-mail. You go to a site that is infected with that type virus it will not detect it or remove it. There are lots of viruses that i personally seen Avast unable to remove. Avira, Has problems updating. It also has problems with faults positives. The time for a good AV is before your computer gets infected. Lots of people on here will tell you that the job of a good AV is to clean up afterward. That's something that i found to be a lie. A good AV will keep it from happening. The only one i have seen so far that works that way is Kaspersky. If your computer is clean it will stay clean with Kaspersky on watch. You can download all that free junk if you want and see if it will clean it off. But there is only one AV right now that will keep it clean. Kaspersky. (EDIT) The one below me has no idea what there talking about. By the time you download any free AV, Then a free firewall you will use more memory then a all in one would use. It's common knowledge that AVG & Avast with a free firewall will use more memory. Another one of those lies i was telling you about. Free AV's and firewalls use more memory. That's the truth. Any one who says they don't are either lying or don't know what there talking about.

Hello,
The discussions and rows over which is the best free antivirus seem never-ending. Until recently, I used to recommend the free version of Avira Antivirus, you can download it for free here http://bit.ly/1p33yKC
I reccomend this because the latest version is much better then all the other and will give you a full proction of your pc from all type of virus or spyware.
Check it out.
Cheers ;)

Use AVG free, people who pay £30-50 a year for kaspersky,Norton etc will tell you it is rubbish and your computer will be infecteted because it doesn't find anything,,but believe me it works.I have used online scanners from Kaspersky,Microsoft and Trend Micro and these have not detected any Viruses that AVG has missed.

I was going to say AVG,but you dont want it,I can't for the life of me see why.
Ive had it for 6 years and have only ever had one virus in all that time,AVG got rid of it with one scan,it's the best anti-virus on the market, millions will tell you,Norton is rubbish.
