It saddens me that the world sees Christianity as ignorant, or that the idea that God created the universe is somehow seen as a challenge to "true science"...
Did you know that it is possible to believe that God created the Universe, and everything in it, and STILL have a respect for education in general, and for science in particular?
I have asked many questions trying to get the point across that there is no conflict between God and science. It bothers me a lot that there are some few "scientists" out there who don't mind falsifying information to preserve their theory...it is not necessary, and in the long run, the truth will prevail anyhow.
I think you are one of those who gave me a link to a site showing fossils discovered in Spain that purport to be from our "common ancestor"...quite interesting, but did you know that, in that same question, another poster gave me a link to another site, with yet another, and even older "common ancestor"??
Did you know that, if you look for them, there are links that show studies that prove that we share similar dna with EVERY OTHER SPECIES on this planet...right down to nematode worms? One site (sorry, I lost the link, but I'm sure if you look you'll find it) even claims that our dna is actually closer to that of pigs than of apes...and that there are similar marks of ancient viruses as well...but nobody seems to be claiming that we are related to pigs...
I am willing to concede that evolution is entirely possible...but I am not ready to believe that everything I see (as well as everything I don't see) sprang from nothing. The notion that the universe always existed violates the Third Law of Thermodynamics (note, the term "law" is still used in scientific circles).
Please don't blame the Dark Ages on Jesus Christ...it was NEVER His idea for any of His disciples to try to suppress information in order to hold on to power...
And if we let ANY group do this, for whatever reason, we will, indeed, be heading for another Dark Ages.
Who will we blame this time?

Actually we would have a better chance of surviving as a country is Creationism was taught. You have it backwards. Look at the historical facts. The majority of this country's existence has been when creationism was taught in the schools. In the overall scope of education evolution is a Johnny-come-lately teaching. the main universities and scientific foundational areas of higher learning came about from Christian educators and scientists. the scientific method was formed formally by a Christian scientist. Now with all the extreme political and social philosophies being propagated in the school systems our morals and levels of higher learning are suffering compared to the past levels of education pre 1960's as a whole.

Calm down. The country doesn't need saving. Most sane people think evolution makes sense. The problem is the media. Fanatics make for more entertaining news items. The media can not report on the war or politics honestly anymore because if they try to they are left out of press conferences.

I think, given enough time that we will either breed it out of our society or we will continue to devolve as we have been and it will all end with a whimper. Just one more thought to ponder, it's a proven fact that people with lower I.Q.'s have more children than people with high I.Q.'s. It's been said that intelligence is not genetic, but if that's true then why are our childrens' test scores, especially in math and science, not keeping up with other nations. Don't you think it's about time that we start limiting the number of children per family by imposing harsh tax penalties on people who are just baby factories? I know I'm sick of paying taxes so that they can just give them away to poor families who can't afford to support their own damn families. A lot of those people are able to work, but don't because it's easier to sit on their asses at home and collect welfare. It's a sad situation and we are the only ones who can change it, as soon as we decide that compacency isn't working anymore.

Unfortunately, a lot of Americans ARE ignorant fundies.
Maybe not most, but still an alarmingly high percentage.
There are a lot of groups that people can join to help out in resisting fundamentalism destroying America. People for the American Way, the ACLU, the Freedom From Religion Foundation, etc.

Is there a way to save the American people (no matter what they believe) from the ignorance of intolerance and under education about other people?
Really, what you believe is a personal choice, why force it on anyone else (that goes for Christians too)
I want to stand up and scream 'respect other people'.
No one is the same, we all have different beliefs about a lot of things, not just religion. We have tolerance fo skin color, sexuality, but not personal beliefs?
I think everyone would get along much better and be happier if we all quite thinking it was our duty to inform everyone what is correct by what we believe, and there for what they should believe

If we do not do something there will be another dark age. The way to check the ignorance of creationism is to do as the believers do; they go round telling all who will waste their time, that they want to tell them about the Lord. Well, we have to form an org and go knocking on doors of believers and tell them about reality.

Time. This generation will no admit its stack of lies. What's worse is that Creationism is losing so badly in the courts that they are close to starting a terrorist wing that will last another generation. Despite the rants of a vocal and visible fringe group, the US will continue to be a world science leader.

I have traveled abroad and it felt awful to be recognized and stereotyped as a US citizen.
generally, US education leans more to religion and less on facts and higher learning
it's centered on making money and putting people to work for cheap and selling the products for a profit
the rest is a moot point
China is becoming what the US was....just like Rome, Brittain, Spain
it too, will fall
Bankers always win

I could care less how the world sees us. It is our science they follow. It is our lead they follow. Yes, we have some real dumb asses in our nation but hey, there is always some rotten fruit at the bottom of the barrel. The best we can do it hold off the fundies while we educate our citizens better.
