Yes. Scarborough is considered a rough area in Toronto. Attempts are being made to clean it up and lower the crime rate, etc but it has a long way to go. As someone who lives in the surrounding area, I would highly suggest that you consider looking elsewhere in Toronto for your new apartment. If you need a list of Web sites offering apartment searches or of real estate agents, feel free to message me. Good luck!

For the GTA? no. scarbourgh will ocassionally have violence, but it's not very often. The most violent place in the whole Toronto and the GTA is Jane Street. it is very violent there, and there are TONS of crimes that occur there every week. Your friend is probally talking about another area of Toronto. Scarbourgh is NOT a place where violence that happens in Toronto occurs that often. I have been living in Scarbourgh for the first 9 years of my life, and no big crimes have happened very often there. Hoped i helped!

scarborough is a suburb on the east end of toronto. Toronto is a big city with several million people, Scarborough is a pretty big area, its not just a small section of the city.
There are some nice neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods. There are going to be rapes and violent crime in any big city.
There was one particularly notorious rapist
by the name of Paul Bernardo, who with his wife then moved on to kidnapping and chopping up young girls. That's happened in and around Toronto/scarborough about 20 years ago. In a big city in the USA, this would be regular occurance.
There are a LOT worse areas in Toronto to live in. You can send me an email if you have any further questions. If you can find out what the major intersections are of the two major streets, I can get a better indication as to where you are planning on moving.
Born and Raised in Toronto. Lived there for over 30 years

Scarborough, aka Skarberia. It's a borough of Toronto, but it used to be an independent suburb before the amalgamation into the City of Toronto. It sucks. Lots of gang violence and shootings. Stay away from there. Toronto is just like any large or medium city: if the rent is cheap, then there's something wrong with either the building, or the neigbourhood, or both.
Will you be working in downtown Toronto? There are plenty of other suburbs that offer cheaper rent than living downtown and then you can commute via GO train or subway.
Personally, I would not want to live within 100 kms of Toronto.

All of this needs to be put into context. Canada is not a country with a huge amount of violent crime. The murder rates are a fraction of those in the US. Some American cities like Washington, Detroit, Atlanta and New Orleans have murder rates many times that of Toronto.
That having been said, there are definitely good and bad areas of Toronto.
The notoriously bad area of Toronto is the Jane and Finch area of the former suburb of North York. I am not terribly familiar with the areas of Scarborough so I can't help you there.

Scarbrough is known as "Greater Toronto". Not cause it's greater than Toronto, because it's a little bit of a ways close to Toronto.
Shootings and all that.. maybe you're thinking of downtown Toronto, lolz.. I rememeber there was one unfortunate incident by the Eaton's center..
Anyways, remember that anywhere in the world where there is people, there is crime. But really, it's a safe place to be as long as you don't live in one of those shady neighbourhoods! If you know what I mean.
It's a great place to be, I've lived in both Toronto&the UK. Toronto&Scarbrough are safer, then let's say London.
<3 have fun in Canada :) its a wonderful place, I assure you!

Please be informed that, there are bad and the good areas in Scarborough just like any other part of the city.Depends where you live.If you are looking for a nicer, cleaner, safer area with good neighbourhood then I would suggest you to move to Uptown Toronto but as you may also appreciate that you will have to pay higher price to rent an apartment
