He could try the new pill Chantix which kills the craving, a new approach to quitting. We have a neighbor who smoked for decades. She got on Chantix (prescription) and within a week VERY rarely has ANY interest in smoking. Chantix ruined her enthusiasm for nicotine.

You can support him by asking how he is doing? Is he able to go through with his decision to quit, have him tell you if he is successful with cutting down , and what he is focusing on in order to stay off the cigarette. Other than that it is really up to him. you can not quit for him, let him know you are here to listen, and help where he thinks he may need help. It is important to have something to keep the hands busy, like typing, or doing any kind of work with his hands. What does he plan to spend the money that he will save when not having to buy cigarettes. Exercise and deep breathing are good to focus on, in order not to have a cigarette. However the actual work of quitting is something he must do for himself. Best Wishes and Happy New Year

If he hasnt seen the new anti smoking commercials our gov has aired then I just dont know. However, keep telling him that he Is STRONG, THAT HE CAN DO ANYTHING HE PUTS HIS MIND TO. kEEP IN TOUCH WITH HIM, THE MORE HE'S ON THE NET WITH YOU THE LESS HE'S SMOKING. There are these wooden sticks that he cam chew on he could try. You could suggest a chart. He should write down whenever he smokes then reverse the chart until he quits. there are stop smoking teas. Good Luck

Those websites suck. Anyone who smokes can tell you that most of the "coping" methods they suggest just make you want to smoke more. Example:
"If you feel the need to smoke, try relaxing by reading a book."
These websites are written up by people who obviously have no personal experience with addiction or understanding of what addiction is or how it works.
The best possible thing for you to tell this guy is to suggest that he try different ways of slowly cutting down his nicotine intake. Going cold turkey rarely works. The patch works for some people, and the gum works for others. The absolute best method is to discuss your intake with a doctor or with a councilor who can recommend a program that will gradually cut down his cigarette consumption over time.

Get him a copy of Allen Carr's "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking."
I personally have known around 10 people who have read it and all but two quit. (In general, the book has a higher success rate than most other programs).
I also know some people for whom hypnotism worked, so maybe you could get him a session with a hypnotist.

He has got to find the strength to quit on his own. If you live 500 miles away or in the same house, he will still find a way to cheet. Smoking is an addition that can only be broken with enough will power.

Who knows if it will work or not, but one of the best things you can probably do is to be his cheerleader, with lots of praise and encouragement when he's doing good at kicking the habit.
And if you know each other in the sense that you do get together once in a while, perhaps you can promise to treat him to dinner or whatever when you see each other IF he has kept moving forward on kicking the habit and has been doing good to fight through it.

If he really wants to quit, he needs to reach deep and quit. There's nothing you can do from 500 miles away, other than maybe send him some nicotine gum or a patch.

NLP worked for me. I changed the way that I visualize smoking, and now it repulses me rather than attracts me. Anyways there's a cool book on the subject, and it's a fun read regardless.
Here's a link.
