Jeremiah 1:5 says - BEFORE I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
KJV
Sperm and eggs unite in the woman so does that mean sperm must have souls?
I had some thoughts on abortion today; I am looking for feedback from the thoughtful:

Wonderful and Fearfuly made! (BTW, you are still misspelling "Fearfully") Don't believe that rumor that you've heard that atheists are just closed down to the idea of hearing from God or experiencing God. For 30 years I searched as best as I knew how, for anything from God... some sign that the Christian God was there. All I've ever got was silence in return. Even now I think I'm open to the possibility. I just call myself an atheist because I do not think there is a likelihood.

I think they only have half a soul. When they combine with the egg (which also has half a soul) it becomes a full soul.
EDIT:
As for your blog, I think you have a good point about neocortical development being necessary for "personhood." I would also add that I think that viability is crucial. (I don't know off the top of my head whether a fetus is viable before or after development of the neocortex.)

Since a single sperm and a single egg unite to form what sometime after 14 days can become identical twins, does that mean there are TWO souls in some sperm/egg sets? Or that the soul "arrives" up to two weeks after conception? Or do twins share a single soul?
Perhaps there is simply no such thing as a "soul", & it's just an imaginary invention to make people feel 'better' about death. That would seem to make the most sense...

No. simple, no. The sperm is nothing on its on. Nor is the egg on its on. it is only when the two combine to from a 'new life' that it could have a soul. At what day, or what stage, i do not know.
What bothers me more that your question is this.
If you really want a great answer , Why not ask God this question ?
G - every time I ask God something, I get silence in return.
That bothers me. I can not immagine that. I may not recieve the answer that second, but I always get an answer.
This is just a piece of advice I like to pass on to you. It is from the book of James.
5If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

Neither sperm nor egg have soul. After egg is fertilized by a sperm and fetus has all organs built, then God's Angels puts soul into fetus after prgnancy completes four months.
On the God's written day and time of death of a human, Angel of Death takes the soul out. Soul is taken back where it comes from and body is de-composed in earth because body contents were made from the products of earth.
Our life on earth is a test. After death, records of our good and bad deeds go with the soul. God will refer to that record to Judge the person on the Day of Judgment.

this is a highly emotive issue and needs to addressed rationally. we must consider all the circumstances very carefully. sometimes a baby is so severely deformed it cannot survive in the womb OR be born without causing harm to the mother. sometimes a 10 year old has been raped and is too young to bear a child. sometimes the mother is so poor that another child would break the family up, and the contraception failed.
it is NOT anyone's right to JUDGE these people. of course abortion is a last resort, an awful and very sad decision any woman must make, but if it is the what must be done, then at least there are no longer 'back street' abortions which often killed the woman too, at least doctors can help these women.
in the bible, it has been written -
if a man causes a woman to miscarry, he will be fined. if he also injures the woman at the same time, then he will be punished also...
Exodus 21:22-25, which reads:
"When men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that there is miscarriage, and yet no harm follows, the one who hurt her shall be fined according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe."
this therefore implies a woman is held in higher esteem then an unborn baby.
gods view on the 'worth' of an unborn or newborn baby is written thus -
When Moses conducts a census, God instructs him to count:
"...all the first-born males of the people of Israel, from a month old and upward..." (Numbers 3:40)
God also tells Moses how to calculate the value of persons being offered to God:
"If the person is from a month old up to five years old, your valuation shall be for a male five shekels of silver, and for a female your valuation shall be three shekels of silver." (Leviticus 27:6)
didnt the xian god also say 'let he without sin cast the first stone' ?? many would do well to dwell on that perhaps
blessed be
edit:
i here add something i wrote some time ago in response to another abortion question:
why it is necessary for women forced into this dreadful situation to be called murderers??
do people think all women who have had this operation have done so with a light heart and a smile on their face?
No They Have Not
yes, the decision to undergo this operation depends on the circumstances, and in the vast majority of cases, each women has a very valid reason.
and to the knee-jerk reactionists who spout such cr*p as "should have used a condom" etc -
1 - do you not realise that some women have been raped and do not wish to keep the seed of their abuser? for an example - a 12 year old girl who has been raped again by her uncle and has fallen pregnant by him?
2 - or a woman raped on her way home from work, with 3 children to look after and a husband to consider, as well as her mental welfare?
3 - have you not heard of conditions such as Turner's Syndrome, where the foetus becomes so deformed physically and mentally that it will either die in the womb or be still-born? causing dangerous infections to the mother and perhaps preventing her to be able to conceive again? this happened to my best friend; it was her first child, newly married [about a year], desperately happy.. then the devastating news, the numerous tests.. the final blow..
yet some still think in all these cases, each woman should carry their child full-term?
really?
there are urban myths about women who use abortion as a form of contraception - i am sure there are very few women who have done this, but of course the propaganda machine creaks into action and the over-emotional tunnel-visioned folk come out the woodwork and dare to make women with genuine reasons [see above] feel guilty about having to undertake an operation that is physically, mentally and emotionally traumatic.
for those who oppose abortion, i say, grow up, spend some time in the real world, and walk a mile in that woman's footsteps before you dare to critisise or preach to her
i hope that everyone can be mature and grasp the understanding that some women have no choice.
so, should they be able to have this operation safely in a sanitised hospital, or will they will be forced back into back alleys, with high risk of infection and death? hmm.... let me know.
i would offer any woman who was faced with this situation unconditional love and support, be non-judgmental and remind them they are not evil or careless.
i hope the anti-abortionists can find empathy and feel that way too.

I would ask this, is God setting a precedent for all people here or for Jeremiah? Is God saying, "I've known every person before they were in the womb, or I knew you, Jeremiah?"
I just mean this. He's speaking directly to Jeremiah. He set him apart as a prophet. He's telling him how special his call is and he is.
I don't know. I've always thought it was for everyone, but the question can be asked.

Are you speaking approximately Sperm cellular or Stem cellular? that's after one hundred twenty days, then the foetus grew to become into given a soul. for this reason, an embryo it is in simple terms days previous and is destroyed after stem cells are bumped off could nevertheless no longer be seen destroying "relatively existence," and for this reason must be permissible. Ahadeeth recorded by means of Bukhari and Muslim on the form of the foetus. "each and each of you possesses his very own formation interior of his mom's womb, first as a drop of count number for 40 days, then as a blood clot for 40 days, then as a blob for 40 days, and then the angel is despatched to respire existence into him." technological expertise has additionally common that the foetus can think of. till now one hundred twenty days the foetus does no longer think of: "The techniques of the foetus seems to be electrically silent during the 1st six weeks of existence. After this time, slowly activities of low intensity happens. So even with the actuality that the techniques is a minimum of 'shifting', that's not 'thinking' in any genuine experience." (The thinking Foetus) yet after one hundred twenty days, while the soul enters the foetus, techniques activities place: "The foetus will become unsleeping sometime during the 2nd trimester...there is ultrasound information that approximately 23 weeks (161 days) the foetus desires. Dreaming is relatively an illustration of the presence of the psychological features required for concept..." (The thinking Foetus)

To put it simply, the bible does not teach an immortal soul that leaves your body at death.
It teaches that we ARE souls in the flesh, and the soul dies when we die.
If you reread your own verse - Jer. 1:5 - you see that it says nothing about a "soul".
It refers to the physical thing inside that becomes a human.
You have to misread this verse to find a meaning of an immortal soul.

No, a soul is formed in the third month of pregnancy. In the first two monthes it is like a plant.
That verse means that God knows every very thing about us. He knows our future, our past and our present .
Good Luck!!

I do not think the sperm or the egg have a soul. But once they merge, the very instant that they do, a soul is there.
Life is there, the size of a mustard seed, but there.
