Check the Saturn Vue, the Hyundai Santa Fe or Tucson, the Kia Sportage, the Dodge Caliber/Jeep Compass, Chevy Equinox, Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, or Nissan Rogue.

I'd lean towards the Hyundai or Dodge products because of their very favorable warranties. Both lines of small SUVs from these manufacturers seem to be doing well so far.

My first car was a 92 Land Rover, and I like it a lot. Small SUV's are good if you want strength instead of speed, but don't want something 30 feet long. I would say yes, but don't plan on going 0 to 60 in anything under 8 seconds.

Look at either the Honda or Toyota line of SUV's, much better than the Mazda or Ford SUV's for reliability and resale.

Those or nice or you can save some money and get a brand new 2007 dealer blowout model. They are still new they just are previous year models. Or buy a lease turn in vehicle. Save some $$$$ its your first car so you dont want to spend an arm and a leg.

of course, you can drive an SUV properly off road can't you? and you can afford the maintenance? the mileage? the poor safety ratings? the high center of gravity? ==easy rollover. If you don't need it, don't buy it, buy something better/safer/cost effective.

You should think about getting a Nissan Rogue as a first car. It is considered a small SUV.
