My 2 1/2 year old cairn terrier has a disc in her back that is rupturing - after the diagnosis, the vet gave us pain medicine and said we should keep her quiet and keep her from jumping and climbing stairs. How can we keep her from jumping for 4 weeks so that her back can heal? She is an active dog and has a younger, rambunctious male companion of the same breed. As I'm typing, I've had to stop her from jumping up on the couch beside me (I lifted her up) and then I had to stop her from jumping down. I'm open to any reasonable suggestions. Thanks.

In this case, the only option really is to crate her.

If you want her to ever get full mobility back and keep it that way, crating her is the only way. It's always hard to do that, but you will be happy you did when she can still walk 5 years from now. Back problems will only get worse if aggravated.

Well since keeping her inactive is what the vet said you should do, it is obvious that it's important to her healing. CRATE HER, keep her away from the other dog. Walk her only on a leash. Keep her safe, and don't let her jump.
Why go to the vet if you aren't willing to follow his advice?

She really needs to be confined, i.e in a large crate where she can't jump up on things and run around. Leash walks only.

It won't be fun, but it will be a lot more fun than what can happen if her back doesn't heal.

If she is very active you can ask your doctor for some medicine to keep her calm. I had to keep my puppy calm for 4 weeks and my vet gave me some Valium for her.
