Im going to be backpacking in New Zealand for about a year. I have poor vision, and need to wear either glasses or eye contacts, and I'm wondering a few things about what I should do while I'm in a foreign country with little extra money, regarding my eyes.

*Contacts--Do they have contacts that you can wear for atleast six months? how much would these cost (ballpark)
*Glasses- I will have a pair no matter what. What brands, what features and materials would be durable and strong enough to brave the wilderness?
ANy insight or experience? please help!

You can't get a pair of contacts you can wear for 6 months straight...but I owned a pair of gas-permiable contact lenses for 2 years. They are daily wear. I had to clean them daily and soak them overnight. I rarely wore them backpacking.

I almost always wore glasses when backpacking. I also have a set of prescription sunglasses with a transition lenses, so in the event I lose my glasses or they break, I have a back-up.

My regular glasses are made of high-index plastic and the frames are very flexible. My sunglasses have lenses from a company called Drive Wear. They are the only transition lenses that are also polarized.

A good set of gas permiable contacts will run about $150...you can buy 6 months worth of disposable lenses for slightly more.

I wear glasses almost all the time - I have an older pair I use for backpacking, along with prescription glacier-type sunglasses.

Have you thought about getting a supply of disposable contact lenses - enough for a year?
