Hip neighborhoods in Brooklyn:

Park Slope

All the "Bococa" neighborhoods - Stands for "Boreom Hill", "Cobble Hill" and "Carroll Gardens".

Brooklyn Heights

Fort Greene

The closest to Manhattan is Brooklyn Heights. Fort Greene isn't too far away, but doesn't have as convenient subways (depends on where in the neighborhood you are.)

Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope are priced like Manhattan. The other neighborhoods above are closing in fast!

Cheaper but still nice are:

Windsor Terrace

Kensington

Prospect Heights

Some people really like Bay Ridge, but it isn't for me. Also it's quite far away. And definately NOT hip!

Brooklyn Heights is the richest neighborhood in Brooklyn. Park Slope is the trendiest. Carroll Gardens, Gravesend, Bensenhurst, Bay Ridge, Manhattan Beach, are also nice neighborhoods. Brooklyn 30 years ago was dangerous. Not today. Only a handful of neighborhoods are unsafe.

Unsafe neighborhoods??? That's annoying. New York is safe. You probably mean minority neighborhoods, which are safe, too. The only crime that occured in my experience happened twice in the village...supposedly safe. A rich guy threw a bottle at my car...one. My car was broken in....two.

New York is unsafe, when people act stupid. Just use the same judgment you'd have anywhere...like walking around alone in the middle of the night without purpose...stupid.

As for my favorite neighborhood in BK...park slope, followed by bed stuy--beautiful apts.

Brooklyn Heights; Almost as expensive as Manhattan. If too expensive, next best is Park Slope.

SInce people have already listed the neighborhoods that are hip, trendy, and close to Manhattan, I'll list the neighborhoods that aren't too safe, that you should try to avoid:

Brownsville
East New York
Flatbush
Canarsie
Crown Heights

That area is each of ways interior the eastern area of Bushwick. I easily would not evaluate that risk-free. i might look in factors like Kensington, Bay Ridge, and sundown Park for cheap apartments that are nonetheless in a secure area.
