Here's my deist's story - i had a hard time believing all the stuff i was told when i was little. like you HAVE to go to church every sunday, and jesus was born of a virgin, he was the one true son of god, etc. eventually, long about my teen years, it became apparent to me that the loving god everyone was always telling me about was letting good people die and bad people live, causing much pain and devastation everywhere, without what seemed to be any rhyme or reason....this didn't add up to me. i don't believe that jesus was the one true son of god as we are all god's children. i DO believe he was a great moral teacher! i believe the bible is nice guide for how to live a good life, but i don't think it was written by god, just some old men that had some good advice. i don't believe god requires us to sit in a "house of stone" every sunday and worship him in order to get into "heaven." i DO believe that there is a higher power out there; that the universe was created. i see too much stuff that fits together too perfectly to be anything but purposely designed. the fact remains that if even one law of nature goes out of whack, the whole thing's screwed. that implies design, which in turn implies a designer. but i don't believe god is standing up in the clouds determining who lives and who dies. he gave us free will and a place to call home. it's up to us what we do with it. so while i believe in god, i just don't believe i have to jump through hoops to prove to him that i'm a good person and he should let me into heaven.

Every day something happens to me that strengthens my belief in God. I've never disbelieved. I've asked God why something has happened, but I've never not believed. I know He is with me every day and I really believe that I have a guardian angel!

I'm very disheartened to see so many non believers here. :o(

God blessed me with a child after the doctors told my wife and I that we were sterile is a miracle in itself. Science failed where God prevailed. Additionally, something had to have caused the Big Bang. That thing is God in my belief. Whether or not he actively plays a role in our lives is a matter of faith, and not one that will ever be scientifically proven.

It was pretty much what didn't happen. I've never seen nor experienced anything that even remotely suggests there is a god. Oh, and, of course, learning to think rationally, and starting to understand why human beings would have an emotional need to create a god when none exists.

nothing. i just educated myself

alot of christians and religious people in general think that people come to disbelief/atheism because something bad happened in their life. like molestation or something tragic...and now theyre angry at god so they deny him or something.

this may be true for some but not all. i dont think ive actually met an atheist that disbelieves because something bad happened to him/her. many (if not most) who dont beleive do so because their logic centers have concluded that there isnt sufficient evidence to conclude that the existenc of god is truthful.

other than that...it all depends on the individual.

i dont believe because it makes no sense to me. the evidence is lacking and it highly unlikely.

started disbelieving in God when i was like 6, my friend died and it wasnt fair to me. regained my belief after coming here to iraq and experiencing hell. one time we walked into a house that was rigged with explosives, no reason it didnt blow up, i believe very strongly it was divine intervention.

I found out that the devil was real first... and I had no choice but to believe then.

Look the devil in the eye one good time and you will be desperate for God!
