One of the signs that the end is near is that the "times of the gentiles" will come to an end. According to Jesus' prohecy this is when Jerusalem will stop being trampled on by us gentiles. Now its under Jewish control, this condition may well be fulfilled, although the Temple site is still in a humiliating state for orthodox Jews - they are not allowed on top currently I think, because of the mosques there.
Right near the end there will be fearful signs in the heavens - I think that must mean astronomically catastrophic events, and also problems with raging seas - vast floods.
Given the hideously powerful weapons around, I think it possible that extremists will "force the issue" making it hard to live moderate lives. Threatsof nuclear destruction could make a one world leader who teaches a vague universal religion which people must sign up to, appeal to normal people, who when scared may be very happy to compromise .. so the Antichrist's coming may not be far away.

Yes it is near.
Luke:21:34 “But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap. 21:35 For it will overtake all who live on the face of the whole earth. 21:36 But stay alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that must happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Mark:13:28 “Learn this parable from the fig tree: Whenever its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 13:29 So also you, when you see these things happening, know that he is near, right at the door. 13:30 I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 13:31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
Be Ready!
13:32 “But as for that day or hour no one knows it – neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son – except the Father. 13:33 Watch out! Stay alert! For you do not know when the time will come.

For all practical and personal purposes, what is the difference between "the end of the world" and "the death of the individual"? When I die it will be, to me, the end of the world. So every generation has predicted "the end of the world" and, in that sense, every generation has been right...
The way I live today and prepare for tomorrow is of far greater importance than idle speculation about future events over which I have no control whatsoever.

You know, I don't know if it is near the end of the world, but the signs are there. I keep hearing on Christian radio that "Jesus is coming soon", and I believe them. I just know that if Jesus is coming, I want to be ready and be enough of an influence on others so that they can come too. Heaven and Hell are no joke, people. Eternity is no fun if you are burning.

NOT Even Close !
the oceans have to dry up
the earth must be changed to a sea of glass
Everyone that has ever lived must be resurrected
and the mellenium must take a thousand plus a generation, years before the earth will have its End.
now if you ask about this society of both western and eastern philosophies. Many many people will be destroyed by the sons of God or by Godhimself in order to bring/usher in the mellenium.
there are 2 prophecies that talk about this.
the meek shall inherit the earth, (new)Babylon will be destroyed.
the political and the religious society of satan will be destroyed. This planet was created by God and his Son, They own the title to it, no one else has the right to be here. hence some day the sons of perdition will be cast out into outer darkness.

In the time it's taken me to answer this question, the end of the world has gotten closer than it ever has before!
[Edit] And now it's even closer!
[Subsequent edit] Closer still!
[Even later edit] Wow! Never seen it so close!
[And still later] ...till now, I mean.
