Yes it is bad to hit a cat, or any animal. It won't do anything to stop the cat scratching the sofa, all it will do is make the cat afraid, and more likely to be aggressive. Aggressive behaviour like hitting only promotes aggression.

The cat is unlikely to associate the hitting with the sofa scratching, so your dad is wasting his time as well as being cruel.

Get the cat a scratch post, preferably one that you can cover in a similar material to what's on the sofa. Put it near the sofa, and when you catch your cat about to scratch, put his paws on it. Better yet, don't let him in the room with the sofa!

Do not let your Dad hit the cat.

Yes, it's bad to hit a cat or any animal. It could cause them to become aggressive and they may retaliate by causing more damage. Instead, go to the pet store and buy products that discourage the cat from scratching the furniture. Cats hate tin foil so first try putting tin foil on the furniture. ALSO buy the cat a scratch post because cats need to scratch something to maintain the health of their claws.

Cats naturally scratch, it is inherent, you simply need to adapt their environment for them, give them something else to scratch.I give my cats a cardboard scratch pad, you can find them at pet stores, walmart, even dollar general. As far as reprimanding the animal, you can use a squirt bottle or squirt gun, but try not to let the cat see you with the squirter, or they will associate it with you and not the scratching.
