This is an old fashioned way of stopping bleeding that occurred when you cut yourself shaving. My father used to use this. It has some sort of powder stuff in it and when you touch it on the cut, the bleeding slows down and stops. I don't know if they even make this any more.

A styptic pencil is a small stick containing a substance that aids blood clotting. If you cut yourself shaving, dab the cut with the tip of the pencil.

It's a white pencil that you apply to skins/cuts that happen with a razor - it's supposed to help stop the bleeding.

The other posters are correct. It is used to clot the blood.
Other things that work well are cornstarch and flour.
My little tiny min pin has black nails and I hate cutting them because you can't see the quick. I always have cornstarch in my house just in case.

White, made from anhydrous aluminum sulfate. Used to stop bleeding of shaving cuts.
