You do not have to bow your head, God looks at the heart- however I think it is a sign of humility.

It was not always that way. Many prayed looking up in oldern times. It does look more respectful, to be lower than the person we are praying to, but no rules about looking down that I have ever read or heard.

The heavens are not above. They are within.
People bow their head for respect. Same as for kneeling.

Because the basic premise in Religion is to be subservient, to lower ones self, to throw "self-esteem" and self-worth to the Four Winds.

i actually have no idea..
i think it means that you're silently praying, and you don't want to look at anything, and you close your eyes, and that's the perfect way to call to the lord..

Respect, you are showing that you have respect for God by lowering your head. It's a tradition you don't' have to, but many still do.

catholic tradition - close your eyes and bow your heads.
its to stop you looking around and being distracted. if the priest saw you looking around during prayer time, you get into trouble after church.
