christmass was a holiday in europe long before jesus had even been born. christmass is a holiday composed ot many indigenous european feasts. some of them christian, a lot of them not.
the tree and gifts for example, are pagan rituals. bringing an evergreen into your house, during the winter equinox is supposed to keep evil spirits away.
in many languages, (english actually being the exception) christmass still retains its original name, Jul, Yule, Joel or Noel.

The 'reason for the season' is actually the tilt of the earth. Without Earth's axial tilt, it would be the same weather all year round. As for where the celebrations originated, ancient peoples (and modern as well) worshipped that great disk in the sky we call Sun and saw the night of the winter solstice as the night of the Sun's birth. This was also a time when most country folk held grand MidWinter's feasts and festivities to try to lift spirits in the midst of such depressing cold. The date of the Solstice is December 21/22. When Chritianity was on the rise, they adopted this celebration to gain the support of pagans. The specific date of December 25 was not decided upon until much later.

Because he isn't.
People were celebrating the Solstice for thousands of years before Jesus was born. When the early Christians chose a date for Jesus' birth, they intentionally chose the 25th because it was already a time when people were celebrating.

Because political correctness says that every religion except for Christianity can be mentioned in public.
Christmas..........Christ-mas.
The holiday Christmas is about the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ.
