God said "In the die that you eat of it..."
To God one thousand years is as one day. So Adam dying in his 900's shows that he did die "that day".

In any case, he died spiritually immediately he ate of the fruit.

EDIT: I don't think I'm what you'd call a Bible literalist.... just sharing.

It all depends on how you interpret it. I think some Bible literalists go too far in many instances, not recognizing that the Bible is also full of metaphors, similes, and analogies, &ct. For instance, the Bible says that God is love. That doesn't mean that he's not a being, but merely an emotion or good feeling. My interpretation of that saying is that God's nature is so loving that he can be called "love" itself. Likewise, my interpretation of the scripture where God said to Adam that he would die when he partook of the forbidden fruit meant that he would become mortal. When Adam partook of the fruit blood began to circulate throughout his body of flesh and he then became capable of temporal death, which is the dissolution of the spirit from the body.

Man was created good, for he was in the image of God. When he sinned (ate the apple that God told him not to), he learned about evil. Thus, he learned about good and evil by committing evil and experiencing the consequences. There was nothing special about the apple itself, just the idea behind it.

"Die" is interpreted as spiritual death, or, the fall of man. The idea of the fallen man is that of original sin, which is why we are baptized, to be reconnected with God (sanctifying grace). Adam was separated from God when he sinned. Note: As Peter says, one day of the Lord is one thousand of our years, so it can be said he died on the same day.

Ge 3:3

But of the fruit of the tree which [is] in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Good question. How about it Christians?

Oh, come on guys. The question was to literalists.

Even so there is no suggestion that God meant a spiritual death.

He did, but it wasn't immediately. Man was originally intended to live forever but sin screwed it up. Sin entered the world via Adam and Eve and as one of the results of sin, man is no longer able to live forever . As we all do, Adam suffered that penalty and died how be it, later on.

the purpose of the fruit wasn't to physically die, it was a test only to see if Adam and Eve would listen and conform to God's laws, and if they ate of the fruit they would die spiritually. When they didn't listen God had to send his only Son to make us aware and to save us.

He did die. He was separated from God in spiritual death, and he also died the same day. Spiritual death is worse than physical death. The Bible also says that for God a day is as 1,000 years and 1,000 years as a day. Adam died before he lived for 1,000 years.

He did die, eventually. His body changed after eating the fruit, becoming mortal. He would have been immortal up until that time.

He did.

He died spiritually. You will see the next time God showed up he ran and hid. His fellowship with God had been broken and also his unity with his wife (he blamed her for what he did.)

Also, from that day forward he began to age. His body was dying.
