It sounds like some files in the software package have corrupted this installation, and it won't allow you to overwrite with the newer version. This isn't good, but you can revert your system to an earlier time, back to when it was working correctly and retry to update iTunes software.

For Vista: Start-type System Restore and click on it in the list when it appears.

For XP: Start--All Programs--Accessories--System Tools--System Restore

When it opens click on the radial dial button in front of Restore My System To An Earlier Time, and click Next.

Select a date when you are sure iTunes was working correctly.

Now, please note that any software/hardware you have installed since the date you choose and today, plus any configuration changes to your system and any programs, will all be lost. Your files will be safe. If at all possible, continue to try to remove iTunes currently installed by using the Add/Remove applet, (XP) or for (Vista) open Control Panel and click on Uninstall a Program.

I understand that iTunes usually updates right over the currently installed program, or so it appears. What really happens is that when you are updating the program, part of the install procedure is to remove the current program and then install the updated program. So, if it is "stuck" you should use the proper removal method to uninstall it.

If at all possible, attempt a Repair of the current iTunes application. That might get it back into a state which allows the updated program to remove it fully.

You can also attempt to remove it in Safe Mode, and see if that successfully gets rid of it.

IF none of the these work, only then use System Restore.

After you select the date, click Restore, and your system will automatically reboot. A notice will greet you telling you whether or not you were successfull in restoring your system.

Now, attempt to download and install the program.

If it still will not work, I strongly suggest you take your system to a reputable repair shop and have an expert fix this as it is something that requires an advanced service.

Good luck and much success with your iTunes application.

*edit* Don't pay any attention to individuals who wish to insult you. Yes, you are allowed to ask your question any way you please as long as you do not insult others. I think your question is fine, and while it shows you are upset, I also understand why. It is frustrating when attempting to work with your computer and it doesn't work as it should.
